Vote delay on Bush court pick
Herald Sun ^ | 17 January 2006

Posted on 01/16/2006 7:49:10 PM PST by Aussie Dasher

OPPOSITION Democrats have gained a one-week delay for a key Senate panel's vote on President George W. Bush's Supreme Court nominee, Samuel Alito.

Senator Patrick Leahy, the top Democrat on the Senate Judiciary Committee, said the panel's Republican chairman, Senator Arlen Specter, had agree to hold the vote on January 24 instead of today (local time).

"I have assured Chairman Specter that no Democratic Senator will hold the matter over on January 24," Senator Leahy said. "He does not anticipate that any Republican Senator will seek to hold it over at that time."

Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist, a Tennessee Republican, blasted the Democrats' move as "unjustified and desperate partisan obstructionism".

"After answering 700 questions for over 18 hours before the committee last week and enduring relentless personal attacks, Judge Alito deserves better," Senator Frist said.

But he predicted that Judge Alito was "on track" to win confirmation in the full Senate, where Republicans hold 55 of 100 seats. His nomination must first be endorsed by the Senate Judiciary Committee.

Senator Frist vowed to schedule a Senate debate the day after the judge was endorsed by the judiciary committee and "move swiftly to a fair up-or-down vote."

"A Justice delayed will not be a Justice denied," Senator Frist said.

During committee hearings last week, Democrats, concerned that Mr Bush's high court pick was too conservative for their taste, grilled Judge Alito about abortion rights, limits on presidential powers and civil rights.

"I have assured Chairman Specter that no Democratic Senator will hold the matter over on January 24," Senator Leahy said.

And Specter believed him, especially after Leahy promised not to ask for an additional week after being granted two months? Stupid RINOs. At this point, I fully expect a Dem filibuster on January 24.

Specter wasn't too bright to have taken them at their word, but in the end the Democrats are alone responsible for breaking their word.

tsk, tsk - Specter did very well in Roberts and Alito hearings, and the 1 week delay is standard Senate request.

Democrats have folded, Alito is in.

RE: your #54:
Specter and the GOP also agreed up front to a one-month delay in beginning the Alito hearings. I certainly hope that Frist is keeping track of all the Republican concessions, as well as all the Democrat lies and broken promises because I have a feeling that Bush will get another chance to fill a vacancy, and it WILL be a bloodbath - - Frist will need every last morsel of ammunition he can save up. He'll need it for the nuke vote.

Regards,
LH

In this case, the committe rules allow the DUmmies to delay one week. He could have called the committee to session tomorrow and have the same thing happen.

The blame in this case belongs to the LOSER DeamonRATS.

Exactly.

The blame clearly belongs to the Loonies on the other side.

Simply put, Specter has no choice but to agree to this delay per committee rules. The previous agreement was outside of the committee proceedings and has no standing. Sure, everyone can feel angered by the Democrats' slimy behavior, but then, we all know that sliminess is their trademark.

While watching the press conference with Specter and Leahy, I was struck by the smirk on Leahy's face - and he kept looking at Specter - as if to say - see - I can get this little twit to do whatever I want.

It was priceless!!

Good Morning DLs,
Look for a paid demo-commie minority to suddenly appear and say, Alito cut in line at the grocery store in front of them.

Maybe passed gas in front of there wife or dying grandmother?

Better yet, failed to give a handout to oppressed homeless person, who was starving to death.(really needed $$$$$$ to fix their crack attack)

The dems will use this type of fabricated prevarication in an attempt to hold up Alito's confirmation.

The communist concept, "By an means necessary." to thwart what is good for America. Now I wonder, who was the promulgator of that specific phrase?

Saying What Needs To Be Said,

Hey C,
Have you have ever seen an old movie called "The Marathon Man?" (Chrome-dome leahy) looks like the Nazi dentist, who was extracting dustin hoffman's teeth in the flick.

While watching the confirmation hearings, I kept waiting on (leahy) to ask (lector specter),"Is It Safe?"

All those commie-demos need to be deported from America.
They are completely out of their element, as to what is best for America.

As I See It,

"A Justice delayed will not be a Justice denied,"

Oooo, fightin' words from Limp Frist. It's a pity he can't lead and can't take a strong stand on key issues. I sure hope the Republicans can find a stonger leader for both house and senate.

Here! Here!

I cannot believe this RHINO would kowtow to the Democratic socialists. He is such a needy person emotionally...he has to please everyone.

Who does he think he is making this decision without input from the Republican leadership?

Careful.

We were not given a democracy by the founders. We were given a "republic...if we could keep it".

Democracy is a jolting path to authoritarianism.

It would be cool if Roberts changed the schedule and put it off for a month or so.

Specter is a Democrat enabler. He should never have been made chairman of that committee. If the Republicans had done the right thing, he wouldn't even be a senator.

Yes, you are correct. And there will be times in the future when we might find ourselves in the minority on important issues. Nevertheless, what's going on here seems less like "defence of the republic" and more like "whackos gone wild".

As a former Pennsylvanian...I completely agree.

Never, never, never make a concession to an unprincipled person. They will take advantage of you again and again.
