President Bush's advisers are resigned to the Democratic capture of the White House in 2008, according to senior Republican sources close to the White House.
GOP sources said White House strategists have attempted to persuade Mr. Bush that Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton, New York Democrat and her partys current front-runner to be the next presidential nominee, cannot be defeated in 2008. Bush strategists said the president should instead focus on seeking to retain the Republican majority in both houses of Congress in 2006 and 2008.
"There is nobody in the White House that will openly say we lost the presidency in 2008," a senior GOP source said. "But while the Democrats are completely focused on 2008, the White House has been completely aloof."
The strategists have argued that given the forecasts of a downturn in the economy, crises with China and Iran, Mrs. Clinton would be besieged with major problems that would ensure a one-term presidency, the sources said.
The strategists have pointed out that Mr. Bush, given the failing health of Vice President Dick Cheney, does not have a natural successor. Recently, Mr. Cheney, who suffers from heart problems, was rushed to the hospital because he had difficulties in breathing.
The sources said the strategists have assessed that Mrs. Clinton would easily win the Democratic leadership and the subsequent race for president. They said Mr. Bush has pledged to campaign vigorously for any GOP presidential nominee.
Administration sources said Mr. Bush has discussed the prospect of a Clinton presidency. But they asserted that the president has focused on the 2006 elections for Congress and the need to maintain the GOP majority.
"If we lost our majority in Congress, then the president immediately becomes a lame duck," an administration source said. "So, the talk of 2008 is not only premature, it's harmful."
"It's hers until she actually has to run for it."
Maybe...but some Dims oppose her. Kerry is one of them.
"Sources" my rear end."
Probably McCain.
she will run as a celebrity, not as a political candidate. she won't make campaign stump speeches, she'll be on Oprah and The View and Today.
I'm not saying it's impossible for Hillary to win, but it certainly is very unlikely that any woman, to say nothing of Hillary, will be elected president, given the state of potential terrorist threats against us.
Though people may be dissatisfied with the situation in Iraq, that's a separate issue entirely. Everybody knows they're gunning for us, and while many may not like the Iraq thing, that's mainly because the pre-war hype did not live up to its promises, and there is no real direct line in peoples minds between a bunch of Saudis' ramming our building and the Iraq affair.
However, that doesn't mean people aren't aware that the worst is yet to come for us, and I don't believe any woman (with the possible exception of Condi, and thats only because she's been there, done that, in a manner of speaking) will sit in the White House until those threats are put well behind us.
What a bunch of bull.
LOL...another clue.."Talk of 'glory years'..get over it...TEXAS WON!!
Souns to me like this is totally an attempt to demoralize the base.
Pet peeve of mine triggered. :-)
Neither are RINO's.
Republicans are loyal to Party. They are neither limited to being conservative or Liberal. Under the proper definition each have been loyal to Party, sought to retain status and expand on it.
I know by RINO you mean Liberal, but have to draw that distinction. Neither of those men stab the Party in the back as a McCain or a Chafee are like to do.
Rudy IS a Liberal, though, I agree with you on that. The only points I like about him are that he's one of the few Republicans not intimidated by the MSM, Dems, and McCain. As well strength and consistency on WOT. Other then that, Liberal with a ton of personal baggage.
Romney I wouldn't classify as either a Liberal or a conservative. No one knows what he is. He ran in MASS, so he took positions to get elected. He wants to run for Rep President, so he's taking positions to appeal to conservatives. He's an unknown quantity which doesn't make me comfortable at all. He could turn out to be the most conservative President the nation's ever had, or the most Liberal. No one would know until after theoretically winning election.
And as I said, I'm not advocating either. Only stating emphatically I detest the spinelessness demonstrated by 91% of the United States Senate. Not so coincidentally the 91% that voted for McCain's Terrorist protection Clause. That is a raw sore point with me. I don't think Romney or Rudy are great candidates either, but they aren't in the U.S. Semate so they are spared the natural disgust I hold for that body being added onto their heads. I'm still waiting for a good candidate to emerge.
As for Hillary, there are only two people I would consider as bad as Hilary and will not have my vote. McCain and Hagel. Newt I'm leaning to put in that category. Anyone else whether it be Allen, Brownback, Coburn though he's not running, Romney, Rudy, Frist...whoever...I'd hold my nose and vote.
And she absolutely can NOT run that way, if she should win the primary, against the GOP candidate.
She hid from the press and the populace, during her Senate run, but the N.Y. media enabled her. A national run can NOT be run that way!
"Sounds to me like this is totally an attempt to demoralize the base."
DIVIDE AND CONQUER first..then demoralize..then win. That is the dem strategy.
Does anyone remember that Democrat who was going to be the nominee in 1988? Of course we all remember President Edward Kennedy who was leading in the polls in 1974.
There are still some good Republicans who are worth voting for.
I agree; it's BS.
This possible future could upset dem plans.
1-Cheney resigns for health reasons
2-Bush puts up Condi for Veep
3-Bush finds legitimate (looking) way to bow out after 2yr point in term
4-Condi enters 2008 race as the sitting president.
"she will run as a celebrity, not as a political candidate. she won't make campaign stump speeches, she'll be on Oprah and The View and Today."
You are so right. I can hear her now, talking about her 'victimhood' at the hands of the 'vast right winged conspiracy'.
I would personally hope that a pro-abortion, anti-Israel Condi Rice never gets closer to the WH than she already is.
Allen/Tancredo for president.
I like the sound of that. Oh yeah!
I've actually been saying this for some time now. In fact, I almost welcome Hitlery's Presidency. At least we'll have a good chance at gridlock.
I found a link for the Video of Hellery
