NEW ORLEANS (AP) Mayor Ray Nagin suggested that recent destruction from hurricanes Katrina, Rita and other natural disasters is a sign that "God is mad at America," and also mad at black communities for tearing themselves apart with violence and divisive politics.
"Surely God is mad at America. He sent us hurricane after hurricane after hurricane, and it's destroyed and put stress on this country," Nagin said as he and other city leaders commemorated Martin Luther King Day. "Surely he doesn't approve of us being in Iraq under false pretenses. But surely he is upset at black America also. We're not taking care of ourselves."
Joking that he may appear to have "post-Katrina stress disorder," Nagin, who is black, talked of an imaginary conversation with the late civil rights leader. They "talked," he said, while he was thinking Monday about what to say at the ceremony outside City Hall to kick off a walking parade in King's honor.
"I said, 'What is it going to take for us to move on and live your dream and make it a reality?' He said, 'I don't think that we need to pay attention any more as much about other folks and racists on the other side.' He said, 'The thing we need to focus on as a community black folks I'm talking about is ourselves.'"
Nagin told the crowd that he also asked, "Why is black-on-black crime such an issue? Why do our young men hate each other so much that they look their brother in the face and they will take a gun and kill him in cold blood?"

Yep, "Kanye Nagin"...geeeeeeeeeesh another confirmation that community leadership in NOLA is terrible.
So then whites are to be kept out of New Orleans so he can maintain power? I thought this type of racial gerrymandering was illegal?
Channeling his inner Pat Robertson I guess ...
Let these words come out of the mouth of any white mayor in the country and see how long he lasts...
Ray's playing a dangerous game, blaming God when we all know it was the evil Rove/Cheney hurricane machine that created Katrina....
Well he also put words in MLK's mouth to suit his agenda, so it seems to me all religious people and blacks easily could be offended.
What, is he applying for Pat Robertson's job?
I don't think God was mad at anybody. Hurricanes happen. The key is how you respond to a disaster, and that is where God comes in.
The Dems responded badly and universally called upon "the Government" for help.
Some blacks responded well - I saw black churches down there handing out barbecue and searching for people who needed help - while some blacks responded very badly indeed. However, some whites (including lower end teaching staff at the universities) fled the city but were among the first to try to return and rebuild - yet they still do not have homes and nobody cares about them because they aren't politically powerful.
Some whites and blacks (such as the corrupt congressperson who had the National Guard hauling his property out of his house) didn't really have to respond at all because they were so well off.
In short, it was an individual thing, and I honestly think Nagin has gone off the deep end if he believes it was a generalized persecution by God Almighty.
Look for Nagin's new book, soon to hit the stands: God Is My Bus Driver.
Good point. What ARE the chances that the MSM will cover any of Mayor Naggin's ramblings? None, unless they put them into a context of how the mayor has been deranged by White racism.
Flip Wilson: The devil made me do it.
"Earlier today, I ordered America's armed forces to strike military and security targets in Iraq. They are joined by British forces. Their mission is to attack Iraq's nuclear, chemical and biological weapons programs and its military capacity to threaten its neighbors" - Bill Clinton, Dec. 16, 1998
Here's a quarter Ray. Buy a computer.
March 23, 2000 (Atlanta) -- The voices sound real, and they won't go away. From deep within a schizophrenic patient's head, they relentlessly repeat their awful messages, which can urge suicide or even murder. Now help may be on the way: A report in the journal Lancet suggests that an electromagnetic device can zap the voices out of the head without hurting the brain.
I am checking on the visual hallucinations now. Thorazine usually does the trick, but maybe there is a brain-zapper that is more fun to watch the administration thereof. Stay tuned.......
Between Abortion & Black-On-Black Crime, Black-Americans can just leave God out of their problems!
Yeah, somehow I don't think Nagin will be subjected to the right-out-of-Orwell Two Minutes Hate that Pat Robertson endured last week.
