Schumer Angles for Senate Democratic Leadership

Ted Kennedy told fellow Democrat Charles Schumer to "take the lead” in the grilling of Supreme Court nominee Samuel Alito before the Senate Judiciary Committee.

And the congressman from New York could parlay his prominent position on the committee into what Washington insiders say is his ultimate goal: The Senate Democratic leadership position.

On the Thursday before the confirmation hearings began, Schumer gave a speech outlining the Democrats’ plan for questioning Alito. A few hours earlier, Kennedy had done the same.

But Kennedy’s briefing "had not gone well,” a report in New York Magazine reveals. "Kennedy, looking tired and haggard, said in error that the Democrats had abandoned any thought of filibustering Alito.”

Schumer’s speech, on the other hand, was "sharp and focused,” the magazine reports, reinforcing "a sense, already growing, of a generational shift of leadership taking place on the committee.” When Schumer was asked if he thought he was inheriting Kennedy’s mantle, he said: "No, I’m not. I’m not as liberal as he is.” But he added: "He has basically said to me, ‘You take the lead.’”

During the hearings, Schumer was the shining light among Democratic interrogators, while his party mates on the committee revealed themselves as "befuddled, toothless gasbags,” according to New York Magazine.

But the magazine article wasn’t totally complimentary of Schumer, head of the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee.

It quoted one former Senate staffer as saying: "He has the smarts, he has the staff, he has the legal background. But he’s more worried about how he looks than if he’s going to win, and he’s more concerned about how he sounds than if he makes his point.”

Sorry. I'm just saying they have zealots (Kennedy, Schumer) and moderates or some fashion of conservative Democrats. Two sides. A broad spectrum with the party. Republicans have the same.

Sorry to stick in your throat but reality is reality.

List the names and check the votes...

There are few moderates (Ben Nelson, Nb, possibly Bill Nelson of Florida, Landrieu of LA).

45 dem Senators and I've run out of names.

"Oddly, the only word that comes to mind when I hear Schumer's name is -- icky. Must be some repressed childhood memory."

He reminds me of the mealy mouthed kid you knew in 6th grade. He knees you in the groin when you are not looking and goes and complains to the teacher that you hit him.

Schumer angles...

The angle of the dangle is directly proportional to the heat of the meat and the square of the hair.

Or so I learned back in high school.

Rumor in DC is that Reid's being investigated as a result of the Abramoff scandal. Stay tuned.

All I'm trying to say is that in any political party you run the gamut from left-to-right: liberals to centrists/moderates and conservatives. Now I think it may be more of a factor to look at individual issues (i.e., abortion, economic and education) however they tend to slide a person from left to right on that scale.

I think most all the time (80% or more) when you look at all the issues or the individual you do find Kennedy, Schumer and Durbin on the Democrat left. Possible Lehey more towards the Democrat center. Former GA Democrat Senator Miller on the Democrat right. That's all I'm trying to say.

The Republican Party is the same with a spattering of persons across the scale. Not they they met but at times they come together to form a block (on an issue more than an ideology), like the "Gang of 14".

I, too, am sorry, but you are wrong, wrong, wrong...

The democrats are no longer democrats! They are socialists and communists.

It is time to quit fooling the American people with the idea that the democrats stand for something other than socialist/communist ideology.

There are only a few old time democrats left. (Period)
Check the voting records!

Learn your enemy. They hide themselves behind the cloak of a popular label, yet, if they disclosed themselves as to who they are, they would garner only the core 30% that makes up the polluted left in this country.

70%+ support democracy and republicanism and a strong ie "woodie" defense!

It is the propaganda of the left that skews the thinking and voting results as well as the corruption of the demo party and lack of republician balls to do anything about stealing or sinking (dropping in the water) votes.

Learn your enemy! And, note, I am not wrong!

A little song my dad used to sing to me when I was about 5-6 years old. I used to talk a lot, so he sat me on his lap while I kept babbling along and sang -with an Indian tune mind you...

Heap big smoke but no fire,
him talk a lot but him not so hot.

And it just came to me as I was reading the Shumer article, LOL!

I love you, Daddy.
