Former U.S. President Bill Clinton says British Prime Minister Tony Blair can look forward to both financial and spiritual rewards when he leaves office.
In an interview with the BBC, Clinton said he had talked to Blair about his future and tried to give him the benefit of his own experience. Blair has said he will not stand in the next British election.
Asked about the possibility of Blair becoming secretary-general of the United Nations, Clinton said Blair would be a good choice.
"What I would say to him and what I have said to him -- I saw him actually last month -- is that, when he does go, he's still got a lot he can do, a lot of good you can do in the world and that's the most important thing," Clinton said.
The former president said Blair could follow his example and create his own operation, or he could give his talents to an existing organization.
Clinton mentioned the other side of leaving politics -- "immense rewards" from speaking fees, books and articles and company directorships.
What Clinton said to Blair.
"You just get to travel around alot without your wife and give a speech every now and again for $50,000 to $100,000 at a pop.
And every night (that you spend away from your wife), there are several hot babes lined up all over the hotel ready to spend the night with you. And you don't have to rape them this time.
It's great."
At one time, I believe, these two were very close, and Blair was was compared (very favorably in the MSM) with Clinton. Subsequently, Blair distinguished himself by aligning with President Bush in confronting terror, which has cost him enormous political capital in his country.
No way he could ever bask in the same artificial sunshine that the media shines on Clinton in retirement.

Once again correct, Australian and the States made the right decision on not joining Kyoto ask any company in England trying to get the quotas on energy consumption.
I have to agree with most of that as much as I cannot stand the man.
Though I still stand by what I have said on this forum many times that a lot of his support of GWB is to give him a world stage that he cannot get without.
I believe they are still close, they appear together on economic forums, Clinton did a recorded election support video for the Labour Party and in particular Blair last year.

While I can't disagree, PM Blair has shown even amongst his greatest critics the support of the US war on terrorism. It was a pleasant surprise for many of us. We are grateful to him and the people of Great Britain.
I agree with you but I do question his motives also he knows that Britains feel closer to you yanks than we do to the rest of Europe he dare not ruin that relationship.

I had thought his going along with clinton thru the 90's was a 'no other choice' decision for Blair. But if they are buds then my Blair opinion immediately flipps. And I have to say I'm sorry!!!
They are political buddies how much they like each other personally I have no idea but their political view points are similar.
One reason why the left of Blair's own party do not care for him they see the alliance with Clinton and his ilk as being too right wing.
If I were an artist, I would paint a picture of billyblythe with his hand, nose and foot caught in a closing White House elevator door--with him trying to pry it open so that he can get back in.
He's just a sad old comic who's playing waaaay past his expiration date.
