Former Vice President Al Gore will attack President Bushs domestic eavesdropping program at a Washington, D.C., speech on Martin Luther King Daywith a Republican by his side.
Gore is teaming up with former Rep. Bob Barr, a Republican, for the policy address, sponsored by the liberal MoveOn.org and libertarian Liberty Coalition. Barr is an outspoken critic of Bush on issues of national security. He led the drive to impeach President Bill Clinton, Gores partner in the White House for eight years.
The speech will specifically point to domestic wiretapping and torture as examples of the administration's efforts to extend executive power beyond Congressional direction and judicial review, according to a MoveOn.org press release. The extent of bipartisan concern over these issues is highlighted by former Republican Rep. Bob Barr's introduction of the Vice President and by the organizations cosponsoring the speech.
Gores speech marks the second time in two weeks he will make a sympathetic plea to Republicans. On Jan. 5, he appeared before a group of center-right activists at Grover Norquists popular Wednesday Group meeting to talk about global warming.
MoveOn.org made a last-minute offer Friday for tickets to Gores speech: Don't worry if you get a waitlist ticket. We expect that everyone on the the waiting list will be able to get into the event, we just can't guarantee it.
The speech will be held at DAR Constitution Hall, the same location Gore used for a Nov. 9, 2003, speech that denounced Bush and then-Atty. Gen. John Ashcroft for their assault on civil liberties.
I guess Barr will be sharing flapjacks with Murtha on Sundays now.
Bob, honestly fella...
"Resistance is futile. You will be assimilated."
Bob Barr has been the ACLU's b**** for years. A principled, pro-terrorist, anti-American libertarian.
Support came from a quarter I hadnt counted on. It was [Gunther] Grass, speaking in English. For the past hour I have had my eyes fixed on the door here, he said. You talk about fascism and police repression. In Germany when I was a student, they come through these doors long ago. Here they must be very slow.
Tom Wolfe, The Intelligent Coeds Guide to America.
agreed 100%. It takes about 1 minute to research the the true history of the ACLU. I wish those with the audiences (O'Reilly, Rush etc..) would let people know. It doesn't do any good to criticize the ACLU if people don't know who founded it and why.
Classic example of why Libertarians can not be entrusted with running the country. Their rules-based logic is hard-coded and overwhelms any common sense they may have.
Mr. Barr - enter this into your rules-engine - it wasn't domestic spying, it was spying on terrorists who were communicating with someone domestically. Does that help? Probably not.
Interesting! Bob Barr lost any support he had from me when he joined the ACLU. I wouldn't walk across the street to hear him speak! Now that he has joined with Gore, you couldn't pay me to go hear him.
Yep. Soros. A man with principle. ; )
By teaming up with Gore he has proven he is for sale.
Doesn't Gore have a tv network to ruin? Or has already been there done that?
Barr+ACLU+algore = OFF HIS ROCKER!
LOL!! Off his rocker works for me! I didn't particularly care for him either long before this -- thought he was extremely arrogant.
This is unbelievable. I remember when he was in favor of impeaching clinton.
Gut for Gunther.
ACLU Barr has lost all credibility
Not surprised to see the Jihadist-loving sodomite Grover Norquist mentioned here. I almost gave up my life membership to the NRA over that sheethead.
