A MAN who helped burn an Australian flag after Sydney's Cronulla race riots has been sentenced to three months in jail.

Hadi Khawaja, 24, of Peakhurst, yesterday pleaded guilty to charges of malicious damage and entering enclosed property with intent to commit a serious offence during public unrest.

Khawaja, who has been an Australian citizen since 1986, admitted damaging an Australian flag at the Brighton-le-Sands RSL on the evening of December 11 as retaliatory violence spread through Sydney suburbs.

His teenage co-accused, who cannot be named, is alleged to have climbed the flagpole and thrown the flag down to Khawaja who set it alight amid a crowd of about 150.

Khawaja said yesterday he was sorry.

"It was a stupid thing to do and not something I would normally do," Khawaja told the court.

"I'd like to apologise to the whole Australian community for the act that I did."

Khawaja was sentenced to three months for each offence, to be served at the same time and backdated to December 23.

Mr Falzon said he had to take the race riots into account, although Khawaja had not actually being involved in them.

FYI, the "RSL" is the Returned Services League.

This mongrel should have had his citizenship revoked, swiftly followed by deportation!

Ungrateful cur! Mongrel indeed.

I wish we had such anti flag burning laws here but the ACLU and it's fellow travelers have prevailed in our courts

I recently read about Lebanese gangs raping Aussie women and intimidating the police. The article I read was posted on FR and mentioned how the police would show up to arrest two or three guys. The men would resist and the cops would call for backup, then the punks would call for backup too and the cops would leave. What's going on?

Bloody State Labor (read: Dem) Governments and their stinking soft attitude on crime mixed with multicultural policies.

That said, I think their view is now changing...

I fear you're probably right. Not a pleasant prospect.

Good to hear its changing. When I read it I just thought about how in Texas or most of the US (maybe not Seattle California or some northeastern states) the cops would be down in seconds itching to crack peoples heads open. It sucks when politicians and unjust laws cause the police to fear doing their job. Sometimes the citizens have to do it.

He wasn't actually charged with flag burning specifically - Australia doesn't have laws against that either - he was charged, basically with vandalism and breaking and entering - he stole someone elses property and destroyed it.
