NYT: After Alito's Testimony, Democrats Still Dislike Him but Can't Stop Him
New York Times ^ | January 13, 2006 | ADAM NAGOURNEY and NEIL A. LEWIS

Posted on 01/12/2006 10:14:58 PM PST by West Coast Conservative

Judge Samuel A. Alito Jr. completed his testimony at his Supreme Court confirmation hearings on Thursday to a blast of opposition from Democrats, who signaled they would not support him. They also indicated, however, that they saw little chance of blocking his confirmation, even with a filibuster.

Several Democratic senators on the Judiciary Committee took the step of announcing, as Judge Alito sat before them, that they had been alienated by his 18 hours of testimony, which left them with doubts about his credibility, as well as deep concern about his record on abortion rights and his views on the White House's effort to expand the definition of executive power.

It seemed clear that Judge Alito, in contrast to John G. Roberts Jr., will draw few if any Democratic votes in the committee, and when his nomination goes to the full Senate.

"As your testimony in these hearings come to a close, I just have to tell you that I remain very troubled, not by anything in your personal history, so much as by your judicial views," said Senator Charles E. Schumer, Democrat of New York. "Unfortunately, by refusing to confront our questions directly and by giving us responses that really don't illuminate how you really think, as opposed to real answers, many of us have no choice but to conclude that you still embrace those views completely or in large part."

The committee's ranking Democrat, Senator Patrick J. Leahy of Vermont, said after the hearing, "I continue to be worried - and I pressed the questions again today as I have all week long - he is not clear that he would serve to protect America's fundamental rights."

Interesting that you have a very multicultural group there, especially Snoopy, lol. You had mentioned the differing skin tones before.

Go ahead liberal dimrats.....scar and besmirch Alito just like you did to Thomas......you will cement a conservative SC justice for life. He wont turn left like Souter, Sandy D, A. Kennedy etc..... Alito will be golden for conservatives as he triumphed over his enemies...cretins that they are.

"Democrats Still Dislike Him but Can't Stop Him"

The Republicans own the legislative and executive branches. The sun comes up in the east. Democrats dislike Alito.

They can't do a thing about it. And as they continue to stand for nothing and hate everything, Democrats become more irrelevant.

Isn't this a great Friday!!!!

He needs to remind them all that they are Senators of the U.S. and are expected to behave responsibly.

You're right.....that may come as a shock to most of them.... I think most dems believe they're only beholden to a small elitist group of constituents.

They are getting campaign funds from wacko groups. It's amazing to watch. BTW, I made a woman cry once unintentionally because of some feat I was trying to do. There is nothing more disabling to a man than a woman who is crying. Those old screwballs in the senate are really out of touch.

Sorry about not answering sooner. Just a guess, but Red States Senators will have a lot of pressure to do the right thing. Democrats will always choose winning over principles.

Well....that was one thing I could relate to. (being a wimmen and all) Having someone you love... abused for 3 days straight... I imagine she was pretty angry and had tried to bottled it up tight..... then Graham came along....gave a few words of admiration and kindness.......causing the dam to burst. Those were tears of relief and pent up emotion.

Of course... it DID work in our favor. :)

Yes, Alito will be confirmed next week. I really wanted a clear discussion about law in those hearings for the American people to hear and learn.

Instead we had an abortion orgy. I almost started looking around for my 50 year old umbilical cord to hang myself with! Ah well I went fishing this morning and caught one! It was 2 inches long! SO if the fish are spawning around Port Hueneme in Ventura, they will be at least 2 feet long and fat by summer and worth eating. You can strip them and cook them in a campfire at Sea Cliff using driftwood. Mmmm. It's a hard place to find. You can also swim there, if you like rocks instead of sand:) There is also a cave in the mountain that you can only see from a certain place.

A clear discussion with Ted, Joe and Curly? lol

I had a 6.5# wide mouth bass give it up last year from my little lake... The drought has all but dried it up....... and I wonder if anything will last long enough to survive. The 8ac lake has turned into 1ac. Ugh! Where da heck is Port Hueneme?

Port Hueneme is near a Naval Air Station by the same name. It is in Ventura County, CA. On a clear day, you can see Santa Barbara Island. There is a big pier that you can fish from. The water is blue. Sometimes idiots jump in the water from there for thrills. After swimming a few hundred feet to shore, they are told not to do that again by the park police:)

You can get there by taking the Ventura FWY northwest from L.A. and slumming along in traffic. I PREFER taking the Wendy Drive exit in Westlake and going over the mountains to the coastal plains. This route takes you through the mountains and you have a picture-perfect scene of the farms from about 1000 feet up when you drive down. It is the most beautiful sight you can imagine.

The Sun will always Rise for me when I go there.

Sounds great. I've only been to CA 3 times....so I'm not real familiar with the coastline. My son and DIL are moving to Dallas from San Diego next week. Both were in the Marines and stationed there for the past 8 yrs. It will be nice to have them nearby for weekend visits. They loved the scenery in CA.... hated the politics and high taxes. :)

CA is infested with Rats. If you are good, you can have target practice 24/7. I know places that Rats can't survive in. There are no Rats in the places where I choose to spend my time. Anyone in the military is going to fly around the world depending upon their orders. Just tell your son and DIL to get their branch chief to recommend them for advanced military training courses. A couple of months in tech school equals 4 years in the college of your choice. I studied 16 hours a day and had study groups with Army, MC, Navy and a guy from the German military. They can pay attention, so tell them to go for it.

>Republicans do not like Ginsberg, but acknowledged her to be qualified to be on the SCOTUS<

I disagree. Ginsberg was confirmed by such a large margin because the minority Republicans understood that with a Democrat Senate, a Democrat president could put anyone he wanted on the Court. It is one of the privileges of winning presidential elections.

Anyone?

I simply said Ginsberg was 'qualified' to be on the SCOTUS. Surely you would expect a minimum level of some knowledge of Law before one could be on the Court?
