CINCINNATI -- Carson Palmer's knee injury was "devastating and potentially career-ending," involving numerous ligament tears, a shredded ligament, damaged cartilage and a dislocated kneecap, his surgeon said Thursday.

The Cincinnati Bengals quarterback tore ligaments in his left knee when he was hit by Pittsburgh's Kimo von Oelhoffen on his first pass during the Steelers' 31-17 playoff victory Sunday.

I hope Palmer can make a full recovery.

I was an AFL fan in 1969 when Bengal quarterback Greg Cook won the rookie-of-the-year award. Cook was injured before the start of the 1970 season, and never made a comeback.

It would be a shame to see it happen again to the Bengals.

Greg Cook! That was back in my day.

Poor guy. Carson Palmer will never have to work a day in his life. I wonder whatever happened to Greg Cook.

The Cincy lineman admitted he helped guide Kimo into the QB and has stated Kimo was not at fault, as the replay showed. He also guided Kimo towards the ground, otherwise the hit may have actually been higher. When Kimo's momentum drove him towards the QB, Palmer still had the ball in his hand, and the natural reaction for the defender is to go for the sack.

Remembering Mark Brunell and the truncated Jaguar rise.

The Bengals have a history of first round draft picks suffering career ruining injuries almost as soon as they put on the uniform. At least Palmer helped make them winners again before he went down.

Saw the replay on the news this evening. Not as graphic as Lawrence Taylor snapping Joe Theismann's leg, but it didn't look terribly comfortable, either. Bummer.

How was a lineman on the ground supposed to know when the play was over? Give me a freaking break.

Have you ever played football? Cheap shots and trash talking begin in peewee football. It's part of the game, and as far as cheap shots go, that's why there are penalties. I can't tell you of the times in a pile, people try to gouge your face, stomp your hands and arms, kick, etc.

I'm sure he intended to get back after the tackle, that's why they pay him. I doubt, though, that he intentionally injured the guy.

From Bengals.com:

Late Thursday night after conducting a series of media interviews, Paulos, through the Bengals public relations department, released the following clarification:

'I believe and regret that media reports, based on interviews with me, have misinterpreted my view of Carson Palmer’s knee injury. Though the injury was serious, the essential facts remain his ACL and MCL have been repaired. I would consider this a typical MCL-ACL football injury. My comments attributed to me that the knee injury was, “devastating and potentially career ending,” were meant to describe such injuries in general, not Carson’s particular case.'

Remembering Mark Brunell and the truncated Jaguar rise.

I've been a sports fan for 40 years and, except for Secretariat, the greatest performance I ever saw was Brunell vs Denver that year. He literally beat the best team in football all by himself.

I think they have to say the worst possibility so there is a lot of wiggle room.
They could have replaced those ligaments and done some reconstruction if need be.
I think he will be back as well.

Yeah, football is the most damaging sport to the body.

There are no football old timers games? Nope!

The momentum took he past Palmer, Kimo had to reach sideways in a different direction to tackle Palmer. It was a whole different move.

IMO the biggest thing this should teach professional football is that they need to put real protective braces on the knees of QBs. They are always at risk of being grabbed after the throw.

Maybe they had better trade up to get Leinart or Young.

Ripped my ACL off the bone a couple years back. After mri's my doctor said not to get it repaired; if I had aspirations of 100% recovery. Reason was my age, late 40's (I guess you are supposed to become a couch potatoe at that age); and that I would just reinjure it with physical activity. He suggested a brace to wear with activity.

I can't run anymore, no basketball, can't hang off the dogsled getting whipped around bends, and forget about any sideways bends of knees. I can still hunt above treeline with brace on and guess I am thankful for that. Everyone should wear those elastic knee supports with age. Sure would beat the limitations ACL damage inflicts.

Sad, but if anyone thinks Palmer will be the athlete he once was; wishful thinking. A future of reinjuries as long as he plays the game.

They also have a history of ending careers of players on other teams, see Bo Jackson.

Sorry but i still can't help but think this was intentional. Thing is when you fall on someone's leg you don't grab yank and twist it.

I know every called it an accident. I never did see it that way and its just a shame if this guys career is over.
