I left blogger row yesterday reluctantly, just as the outrageous actions of the Democratic caucus on Judiciary hit its nadir. The smear tactics trotted out to derail the nomination of Judge Alito over the past few weeks had hit their nadir when Ted Kennedy demanded a subpoena for the William Rusher papers to determine whether the National Review publisher may have written something about CAP and Alito. Never mind that this was an entirely off-subject line of questioning from the beginning; Alito's own hiring record proved that he has no animus towards equal opportunity for women or minorities, and the Prospect itself had a woman (Laura Ingraham) and a minority (Dinesh D'Souza) as its editors in chief. Never mind that Alito has had decades of dedicated public service with an impeccable record of excellence, including fifteen years on the appellate court. Never mind that he has not been called before Congress to defend himself on charges but for confirmation to move up to the Supreme Court by invitation of the President.
When what should be a simple confirmation process reduces family members to tears, it shows that one party has degenerated into a secular Inquisition. And let me remind you that it was this party that, on more than one occasion, elected a former Klansman to the post of Majority Leader -- a man who as recently as three years ago defended the use of the "n-word".
In fact, most of the Senators from that caucus are responsible for that election of Byrd to his leadership posts.
I would assume that under their definition, Leahy, Kennedy, Biden, and perhaps Schumer are all racists and genocidists. They're certainly tied much closer to those beliefs than Samuel Alito, and I invite them to explain the difference to the American people.
To all the FReepers who said the Democrats couldn't sink any lower, you owe me a Coke.
satan always overplays his hand.
Republicans should never underestimate how low a democrat will go.
I would say that Ted stepped on his Johnson with spiked golf shoes, but I am sure he hasnt even seen his Johnson over that tremendous gut in the last 15 years.
Certainly if we go back into peoples past Ted wont come out so good.
Their behavior has been despicable. The only good thing about all of this is the world got to see what total lowlifes they are. They haven't even tried to hide it.
"Inquisition".That word describes it all.I watched a couple hours of the hearing on Fox,and i was simply appaled at the grilling Alito had to endure. What a bunch of self righteous bufoons.I got the impression that some of these senators are more concerned with getting face time in front of the camera.
They believe they're doing a great service to this country by being this way.
"Their behavior has been despicable. The only good thing about all of this is the world got to see what total lowlifes they are. They haven't even tried to hide it."
But, then again...in the world we find ourselves in, this is very normal, much respected behavior, amongst the elites!
i agree. i pray on a regular basis that the true beliefs, motives and intentions of those seeking power in this nation would be openly visible for all to see. then, let the chips fall where they may. i have seen much in the last year or two that makes me believe that these prayers are being answered. still not sure what type of leadership our culture will choose but at least if everyone's true beliefs are known - the choice becomes clearer.
Kennedy and Shumer were the worst, but the scilience of their fellow democrats speaks loudly that this rude behavior is OK. The dems have jumped the shark.
The CAP thing is interesting. Alito seems to hardly have been involved in it, so he keeps saying so, but therefore there is little defense of the group itself.
But it seems that the group is NOT what the democrats say it was. The problem is that if you spend a lot of time trying to defend the group, it would suggest that you think that the Alito tie to the group is important, and that therefore it is important to show the group was clean.
It is hard to imagine that CAP was really formed to oppress women and minorities, but I've seen several news articles that state that as a FACT, and suggest that the only issue is whether Alito should be held accountable for listing such a horrible group on his Resume.
I was half watching fox,and pecking away at the key board. His former membership in CAP(back in the 1960's)is a big deal. The same questions over and over again.BTW,your right, they probably think they're doing a great service for the country, but they look like bullies.I hope other Americans feel the same way i do.
Teddy was a member of an all male club at Harvard. Ya just can't make this stuff up.
The outrageous and pompous behavior of the liberal members of the Senate Judiciary Committee during today's hearings may well be the nail in the coffin for the political party known as the Democrats. Public opinion was with Alito going into the hearings, and the shameful performance put on by Kennedy, Schumer and Biden will only solidify that support with sympathy. Once the vote is confirmed, the Democrats have lost control of all three braches of government officially recognized in the Constitution.
Officially we act as if though the court is not political. In reality, it has been political since its inception. The Federalists and the Jeffersonian Democrats fought this framework out in Marbury v/ Madison. However there was never any question as to whether or not the President has the right to appoint Justices. Both the Washington and Adams administrations appointed Federalists exclusively to the bench.
What you are seeing are the last heaving breaths of a dying party.
The judicial branch has been owned by liberal "progressives" for nearly 40 or 50 years....but it appears very soon, their last tenuous grip will be broken and mostly conservative interests will own every branch of the Consitutional framework.
PAPER: Sen. Kennedy was member of all-male club
Wed Jan 11 2006 22:40:10 ET
Conservative activists are eager to point out that Sen Ted Kennedy was on shaky ground accusing the Judge Alito of associating with people opposed to the inclusion of women in private institutions, the WASHINGTON TIMES is fronting on Thursday.
The eight-term senator belonged to an all-male social club -- the Owl -- at Harvard University. The Owl refused to admit women until it was forced to do so during the 1980s, according to records kept by the HARVARD CRIMSON, the student newspaper.
A Kennedy spokeswoman said it was an entirely different matter.
"No one can question Senator Kennedy's commitment to equality, justice and civil rights," said Laura Capps. "What he was part of was a social club, not a radical group pushing a radical agenda."
Anyway, she said, even though women were admitted to the university during Mr. Kennedy's tenure, they weren't fully integrated to the campus until much later.
Developing...
In an earlier time, both Biden and Kennedy would have been publicly challenged to a duel for their words.
What do they mean "At long last?" They've never had any shame.
... and there is nothing so dangerous and unpredictable as a cornered Rat.
