Who Caused Alito's Wife to Cry?
Human Events Online ^ | 1/11/6 | Robert B. Bluey

Posted on 01/11/2006 7:24:25 PM PST by SmithL

A group cleverly called People for the Alito Way says the Associated Press wrongly characterized its an episode at Samuel Alito's hearing today that left his wife in tears.

The AP story, which followed an exclusive from the Drudge Report, placed the blame on a Republican senator rather than committee Democrats -- a fact the conservative group says is just plain wrong.

After taking a steady beating from Senate Democrats today, Sen. Lindsey Graham (R.-S.C.) offered an apology to Alito. (Read the full transcript.)

"Judge Alito, I am sorry that you've had to go through this," Graham said. "I am sorry that your family has had to sit here and listen to this."

Alito's wife, Martha-Ann Bomgardner, at this point had begun to choke up. She exited the hearing room and returned after a break holding her husband's hand.

But, according to the AP's account, it was a comment Graham made moments earlier that triggered Bomgardner's emotions.

"And really what I would look at to believe you're not -- and I'm going to be very honest with you -- is: How have you lived your life? Are you really a closet bigot?" Graham asked rhetorically.

The AP story reports:

"Martha-Ann Bomgardner, who had sat behind her husband for hours of questioning  over several days, left as her husband was being questioned by Republican Sen. Lindsey Graham of South Carolina.

"'Are you really a closet bigot?' Graham asked Alito. The nominee said no, and Graham said, "No sir, you’re not."

Commenting on the AP story, Coalition for a Fair Judiciary President Kay Daly said: “Mrs. Alito has shown grace under pressure after months of abuse at the hands of well-funded, left wing organizations and their Democratic minions on the Senate Judiciary Committee,” said Kay Daly. For the Associated Press to misrepresent these events in an attempt to smear Republican Senator Lindsey Graham sets a new low in the already subterranean level of journalistic standards on display in Judge Alito’s confirmation process.”

I have read a great deal about the Chappaquiddick incident. There is no doubt in my mind that, at minimum, Ted Kennedy was guilty of manslaughter. I emphasize, at minimum. Had there been a proper investigation, a circumstantial case could have been made for murder. The notion that he has remained in the senate all these years is a travesty. The notion that he sits in judgment of anyone else is a disgrace.

Yep, I'd have been over the rail knocking heads, and calling out the arrogant, sanctimonious, low-life, grandstanding, subversive leeches to settle it like men. And then I'd start the next day with my views on the 2nd Amendment, starting with concealed carry in places where my family is being abused.

She cried after being forced for spent three days to witness her husband be tortured in precisely the same manner as the the Leftist loons and the RINOs prohibited being done in the Al-Quaida Protection Act.

I think Graham's honest emotional reaction gave the media the opportunity, and the soundbite they wanted.

He should be more careful to guard his emotions, though I understand completely.

i have a relative who works for on the staff
of a senator; he is always after me to come up there to spend some time and take the private tour, go to some hearings, etc.

i wonder if i could do it without making
an ass out of myself. i just do not think I could be civil to some
of these people.

"Judge Alito how much money did you take from the Injuns white man pale face flunky?

None you say - what the hell didn't you get memo? You might not be smart enough to be a judge - (Sarc off)

She was accustomed to the accusations and Graham's unexpected moment of kindness caused her to tear up for a moment.

He is truly a pig, a dirtbag in the worst sense of how we humans mean that about another human.

BTW Howlin, I noted today that you said you fell and are not feeling well. I wish you all the best and hope you recover quickly.

I think the Dems would have skipped this process and just confirmed her, since they admired her so much.

"What if Alito would have said: "Senator, you've asked for my personal views on so many issues. Why haven't you asked me whether YOU were guilty of murder?"

I think he has to be more subtle, maybe giving his opinion on Ted's brothers wire tapping Martin Luther King who had know know link to Al Qaeda.

For the Dims that would be the 'condemnation' process!

probably 75-90% of the senators are grandstanders. It doens't matter - Graham was right to ask point blank if the Judge was a bigot.

I didn't get that impression on ABC's evening news, nor CBS (I flipped it around diff channels to see the impression, though I thought CBS did a better job than ABC of plainly asking if the Dems went too far today and making it clear that Graham was defending Alito). Fox was fine. I didn't really catch CNN.

The reporter at AP needs to be fired though. I would not hire somebody so stupid.
