[BACKGROUND]Supreme Court Nominee Samuel Alito touted membership in reactionary organization
People For the American Way has requested access to the records of Concerned Alumni of Princeton (CAP) stored at the Library of Congress in the archive of former National Review publisher William Rusher. The records should shed more light on the activities and ideology of the highly controversial organization and could sharpen questions about why Supreme Court nominee Samuel Alito touted his membership in the group when applying for a promotion to a high level job in the Reagan Justice Department. The records are held at the Library of Congress under a restriction requiring Rusher’s approval to review the documents.
In 1985, Supreme Court nominee Samuel Alito, then 35 and working in the Reagan solicitor general’s office, applied for a promotion to deputy assistant attorney general. He included a statement with his application in which he pledged allegiance to right-wing legal and judicial philosophy. Among the affiliations he used to establish his political bona fides was his membership in CAP.
“The question for senators to consider – and to ask – is why Samuel Alito would brag about his membership in an organization known for its fervent hostility to the inclusion of women and minorities at Princeton,” said People For the American Way President Ralph G. Neas. “What does it tell us about his approach to issues like equal opportunity?”
“Even a preliminary review of CAP’s history demonstrates that it waged a campaign to turn back the clock at Princeton with ferocious zeal,” Neas said. “If Alito were to bring CAP’s values to the Supreme Court, he would help turn back the clock in America.”
A preliminary review of the organization’s history reveals that:
CAP complained about the admission of women to Princeton. T. Harding Jones, Alito’s classmate and CAP’s executive director in 1974 (two years after they graduated) told the New York Times that “Co-education has ruined the mystique and the camaraderies that used to exist. Princeton has now given into the fad of the moment, and I think it’s going to prove to be a very unfortunate thing.”1
CAP also complained about the admission of minorities to Princeton. An alumnus wrote in 1974 in CAP’s magazine that “We had trusted the admissions office to select young men who could and would become part of the great Princeton tradition. In my day, [Dean of Student Affairs] Andy Brown would have been called to task for his open love affair with minorities.”2
CAP repeatedly warned that the admission of women and minorities would undermine the university. A 1973 CAP fundraising letter claimed that “a student population of approximately 40 percent women and minorities will largely vitiate the alumni body of the future.”3 And in 1974, T. Harding Jones claimed that “Annual giving has been hurt very substantially by the equal-access vote.”4
CAP supported a quota system to ensure that the vast majority of students would continue to be men. Asa Bushnell, then chairman of CAP, told the New York Times in 1974 that “Many Princeton graduates are unhappy over the fact that the administration has seen fit to abrogate the virtual guarantee that 800 [out of roughly 1,100] would continue to be the number of males in each freshman class.”5
CAP opposed affirmative action for women and minorities but supported affirmative action for athletes and the children of alumni.6 For instance, CAP principal John Thatcher argued in 1974 that “Academic weakness below the projected graduating level, or character defect, should be the only grounds for rejecting athletes.”7
Prospect magazine, published by CAP, specialized in reactionary rhetoric and ad hominem attacks. Feminists were labeled “frumps and freaks” and “a 1983 item on sexual harassment was illustrated with a female student sunning herself in a bikini.”8 In 1983, a column in the Prospect had the following to say about international students at Princeton: “I suppose the new students I am observing all had the required SAT scores to get into Princeton, but I really do not believe it for a minute. They are here on the basis of a theory.”9 In 1984 – the year before Alito touted his CAP membership in his job application letter – “the magazine observed the death of a female coal miner who won her job through a discrimination suit and concluded, ‘Sally Frank, take note.’” 10 Sally Frank was a Princeton student who took legal action to open the doors of exclusive, all-male eating clubs at the university to women.
CAP advocated a quota system to ensure that humanities and social science departments hired right wing professors.11

In the article written by then PROSPECT editor Frederick Foote, Foote writes: “The facts show that, for whatever reasons, whites today are more intelligent than blacks.”
Senate Democrats expect excerpts like this written by other Princeton graduates will be enough to torpedo the Alito nomination.
One Democrat Hill staffer involved in their strategy declared, “Put a fork in Scalito. It doesn’t matter that Alito didn’t write it, it doesn’t matter that Alito wasn’t that active in the group, Foote wrote it in CAP’s magazine and we are going to make Alito own it.”
However, a Republican insider contacted about the situation said, “It’s the dumbest thing I’ve ever heard. The reason CAP was formed was to protest against people like Drujack who think killing chickens is similar to what happened at Auschwitz. I don’t understand how what a guy named Foote wrote in some magazine has anything to do with Alito.”

The final witness on the Senate Democrats newly unveiled witness list for Alito’s hearing is freelance journalist Stephen Dujack.
Dujack is a ’76 Princeton graduate and a longtime critic of CAP.
Dujack was the author of a highly critical 1986 op-ed in the PRINCETON ALUMNI WEEKLY titled “The Contradictions Of CAP.” Dujack slammed the group for its policies opposing Princeton's decision to admit women and minorities.
Dujack now says: "Judge Alito will have to explain to the Senate Judiciary Committee why he paid dues to an outfit... that was overtly racist and sexist for its entire 14-year existence — at times passionately so, too."
Dujack adds: "There is no way for Alito's backers to claim his association with the organization does not imply endorsement of its views, for opposition to women and minorities at Princeton was as central to CAP as opposition to drunken driving is to MADD."
However, THE DRUDGE REPORT has learned the Democrats’ star witness comes with baggage of his own. Dujack penned an op-ed in 2003 that compared farm animals to Holocaust victims and gave money to the Kerry presidential campaign.
In the April 21, 2003 LOS ANGELES TIMES, Dujack wrote: “Like the victims of the Holocaust, animals are rounded up, trucked hundreds of miles to the kill floor and slaughtered.” Dujack went on, “To those who defend the modern-day Holocaust on animals by saying that animals are slaughtered for food and give us sustenance, I ask: if the victims of the Holocaust had been eaten, would that have justified the abuse and murder?”
THE DRUDGE REPORT has also uncovered a purported $2,000 donation Dujack made to John Kerry’s presidential campaign in 2004.
Bet they can't find records of my activities in a secret Princeton hate group. That must prove how evil I am.
Let just one 'pub on the committee put things in there proper perspective-Alito is to be held responsible for the writing of a member of a group he once belonged to so when is Robert Byrd going to be held to the same standard?
Interesting. I was googling Dujack and found out he's the grandson of Isaac Bashevis Singer, 1998 Nobel prize winner, one of the last Yiddish novelists (at least in the 20's - 30's), and avowed vegetarian.

Should I be worried if this becomes the standard on how to judge someone?
I am a monthly supporter of Free Republic, and I would hate to have someone judge me by what some post on this forum.
I would think an individuals action and writing would hold more weight then an organization they were a member of when young.
Oh, I forgot, this is from a group on the left. Any opinion that does not agree with theirs makes you wrong.
I wonder how many of these "Liberal" Democrats have been to and still frequent the all male, private Bohemian Grove [Club]?

Can you say "guilt by association"? We know that the ACLU has defended the "rights" of Nazis and pedophiles (NAMBLA), but woe betide the conservative who dares infer from that the every current and former member of the ACLU (one of whom currently sits on the USSC) is a Nazi or a pedophile.
Drudge’s article quotes an anonymous Democratic staffer on Capitol Hill:

Human Events goes on to write: "...appears Drudge was leaked the story by a Senate Democrat aide. While I have no knowledge of who that aide may work for, I have three guesses: Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid, Sen. Teddy Kennedy (who has pulled dirty tricks in the past) or Sen. Dick Durbin, who needs to prove his place as the No. 2 Democrat in the Senate."

A far more important question concerns the torching of the ROTC center at Princeton and who was responsible. Personally, I have a sick feeling that members of PFAW and probably even members of Sen Kennedy's or Schumer's own aides were either responsible for those atrocious acts or were complicit.
I certainly hope that someone in the RNC or Freeper community has the names of those responsible and can publically tie them to the anti-Alito Dems.
It's time for the truth be told about these domestic terrorists and expose their current whereabouts and just who they are working for now....
