OAKLAND, Calif. — Dressed in bow ties and dark suits, nearly a dozen men carrying metal pipes entered a corner store, shattered refrigerator cases and smashed bottles of liquor, wine and beer, terrifying the clerk but stealing nothing.
The just wanted to leave a message: Stop selling alcohol to fellow Muslims.
In urban America, friction between poor residents and immigrant storeowners is nothing new. Nor are complaints that inner-city neighborhoods are glutted with markets that sell alcohol and contribute to violent crime, vagrancy and other social ills.
But the recent attack at San Pablo Liquor — and an identical vandalism spree at another West Oakland store later that evening, along with an arson fire there and the kidnapping of the owner a few days later — have injected religion into the debate.
The two episodes highlighted tensions — and different interpretations of the Koran — between black Muslims in this struggling, crime-ridden city of 400,000 and Middle Eastern shop owners, many of them also Muslims.
Six men connected to a bakery founded by a prominent black Muslim family have been arrested in the Nov. 23 attacks, which were caught on store security cameras. In both instances, the vandals asked store clerks why they were selling alcohol when it was against the Muslim faith.
One of the men arrested on charges that included hate crimes and vandalism was 19-year-old Yusuf Bey IV. His father, Yusuf Bey, a black Muslim leader who died in 2003, founded Your Black Muslim Bakery, which sells Malcolm X books along with baked goods.

If so, it was a bad strategy.
Nothing like a little trial run to shake out the bugs in your equipment and manpower.
Not to mention to get the losers in Congress to open the purse strings BEFORE the next time.

Um, I might just know more Muslims than you, because that statement is not entirely accurate. At least, it's just as accurate as saying Jews or Christians were barely with the 20th Century. Most religions, including our 3 favorite mainstream ones, are inherently behind the rest of modern civilization. For example, the Catholic Church didn't forgive Gallileo and acknowledge the heliocentric model of the solar system until 1992. Christianity also abhors homosexuality, pornography, masturbation, and other "immoral" things like that. Judiasm still regards the usage of electricity as work, which is why if I'm not mistaken you cannot use electrical appliances and whatnot on the Sabbath. The very religious Orthodox Jews also believe that if anyone ever touches their "Jew Curls", as many less tolerant people have lovingly dubbed them, they must cut them off. Islam is guilty of similiar superstitions.
Such superstitions are, obviously, not a reflection of 20th and 21st Century beliefs, ideas, or scientific achievement. But you really can't say, without being completely false, that the people of any of these religions, especially Americans who follow these religions, are completely backwards. Especially since I have seen, and am personally acquainted with, numerous American Christians, Jews, Muslims, and people of other non-mainstream religions, that make frequent and liberal use of cell phones, Internet, digital cameras, and the latest clothing fashions. I don't know where you live, but where I am, most people, regardless of relgion, have jumped aboard with the 21st Century, making your statement about Muslims--or any other religions--false.
And you want to talk about not jumping aboard the 20th Century? Two words: The Amish.

Okay, can anyone tell me what a "nuisance" liquor store is, other than a legitimate business that's licensed and paying fees and engaging in commerce that provides nice windfalls to governments that don't even have to produce a product to reap great profits?!

Umm, actually, no.
Islam is actually a religion of peace. I know plenty of Muslims, some religious, some not, but they all agree that violence is not something the Koran teaches. I'm not familiar with the Koran itself, it probably does have some violent parts in it, but probably no more than the Bible. Whatever the case, what you are thinking of is Islamic extremists who twist the words of the Koran to justify hateful and violent acts, just like Christian extremists who blow up abortion clinics or go gay bashing or whatever.
I have plenty of friends who are Muslim, I have plenty of friends who are of other religions, even some who have rejected religion period, so if you are going to go around bad-mouthing my friends, even indirectly as you did above, do me a favor and think before you speak. No offense or anything man, don't take it the wrong way.
Not to say that one religion is better than the other, because none of them are, but isn't Christianity a haven for those who have guilt, just as Islam is allegedly a haven for those who have hate? Like I said, neither religion is better than the other, but if you are going to go around insulting other people's religions, make sure yours if flawless first (assuming you are a Christian).
This is the plan.
