Airline bans Bibles to avoid offending Muslims Carrier to Saudi Arabia also precluding crucifixes, teddy bears Posted: January 9, 2006 11:20 p.m. Eastern
A British airline banned its staff from taking Bibles and wearing crucifixes or St. Christopher medals on flights to Saudi Arabia to avoid offend the country's Muslims. British Midland International also has told female flight attendants they must walk two paces behind male colleagues and cover themselves from head to foot in a headscarf and robe known as an abaya, the Mirror newspaper of London reported. Teddy bears or other cuddly toys also are not allowed. Airline officials, who have sparked outrage, the paper says, explain the Islamic kingdom's strict laws enforced by religious police prohibit public practice of Christianity and figures of animals. BMI spokesman Phil Shepherd said: "In providing air services people want, demand and use, we have an obligation to respect the customs of the destination country." An airline employee who asked not to be named told the Mirror: "It's outrageous that we must respect their beliefs but they're not prepared to respect ours." The employee said his grandmother gave him a crucifix shortly before she died that he wears at all times. "It's got massive sentimental value and I don't see why I have to remove it," he said. The airline's staff handbook says: "Prior to disembarking the aircraft all female crew will be required to put on their company issued abaya. It will be issued with the headscarf which must be worn." The employees' union wants staff members to be able to opt out of the flights, but the airline says the only option is to transfer from overseas staff to domestic flights, which could mean a loss of about $30,000 a year in wages. About 40 staff members have filed complaints since the route began in September. Some of the male members who are homosexual have called in sick, because they are afraid of traveling to Saudi Arabia, where homosexual activity is punishable by flogging, jail or death. |
And women wearing burkas offends me. I want to see some leg.
So if you come to my office looking for my help, you better conform to my sensitivities. And those legs better be shaven too.
Aint no way I'd take off my crusifix to fly, they can fly strait to hell far as i'm concerned.
Does Britain have any anti-discrimination laws like the US does? If so, it would seem that telling female employees they must act subservient could get them into hot water....
susie
Wouldn't the simpler solution be not to fly to Saudi Arabia? Let the easily offended Muzzies walk. Mohammed didn't use an airplane to get to Mecca; why should they?
I do but our government forbids us from defending ourselves from a clearly defined enemy that makes no attempt to hide the fact that they will either convert or kill us. I think there are more of us who would take action if our government was not a threat to our own self defense.
Hell you cannot even speak the truth about is-SLIMES and that puke Mo-Ham-Mud without some apologist calling you a racist and spreading the lie that "most mudslimes are moderates" That is BS raised to the power of infinity.
How about respecting the customs of your employees who need to wear crucifixes and read the bible in their free time? I guess they don't count.
It's really long past time for an all-out war to utterly eliminate Islam from the planet Earth.
Seriously.
This is a perfect excuse for a strike. If I ever flew this airline, I as a passenger would wear the biggest cross I could find and carry a bible the size of one of those big dictionaries in the library. I'd also use my portable CD player to blast Christian music through my headphones. Of course I'd be sure to tell all my fellow passengers, "God bless you."
Respecting the customs of others, does not mean abandoning your own.
You fly to a Muslim country.
They wear their burkhas. You wear your crucifix. Mutual respect. Life goes on.
That's the way it should work.
This is most insulting. Banning Teddy Bears! I have now heard everything. Is there no sanity in this world any more?
This is the first time I think I'd honestly consider a tatoo - one of a nice cross right on my hand with John 3:16 written there.
I got it Stoat! It's not you. I don't need people to write the word "sarcasm" for me to recognize it when I see it.
No, that's too generic, you have to say "Jesus Loves You."
Leave the Bible, leave the cross. Wear the garb, copy the customs = De facto forced conversion.
Burkah type garb forced on women has it's beginning in ancient pagan worship. It's a coverup for a vicious, ungodly religeon.
I wouldn,t feel too confident of the air worthiness of aircraft maintained by such transparently moronic individuals or the chances of the crew locating the proper airport or the likelyhood of them landing the plane rightside up, even if they did.
When we don't need their oil. The higher the price of crude the greater the arrogance of Muslims. Which is a loser religion but has lots of oil. Enough to buy and make nukes in Iran. I don't trust deranged religious fanatics with nuclear weapons

Thanks to Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, the president of Iran, a new word has entered the political vocabulary: mahdaviat.
Not surprisingly, its a technical religious term. Mahdaviat derives from mahdi, Arabic for rightly-guided one, a major figure in Islamic eschatology. He is, explains the Encyclopaedia of Islam, the restorer of religion and justice who will rule before the end of the world. The concept originated in the earliest years of Islam and, over time, became particularly identified with the Shiite branch. Whereas it never became an essential part of Sunni religious doctrine, continues the encyclopedia, Belief in the coming of the Mahdi of the Family of the Prophet became a central aspect of the faith in radical Shiism, where it is also known as the return of the Twelfth Imam.(Excerpt) Read more at frontpagemag.com ...
When the Moos aren't selling oil, what have they got? Sand? They'll starve or fight themselves to death, which is fine.
And just when do we start taking oil as war reparations from Iraq? Are we supposed to go around freeing Moo idiots for free forever?
