Iran breaks UN seals on Nuclear facilities
BBC ^ | 10-01-2006 | BBC

Iran has removed seals from a nuclear facility and will begin research there in the coming hours, a top Iranian nuclear official has announced. The move ends a two-year suspension of research, and could result in Tehran being referred to the UN Security Council for possible sanctions.

Germany on Monday described Iran's planned move as "very, very ominous".

Western countries fear Iran's nuclear programme could be used to make atomic bombs, but Tehran denies such a goal.

The UN response?

"STOP! Or We'll tell you to stop again!"

Germany is more concerned with its appeasement agenda and whining at Bush about Gitmo than showing any balls at all and going tough on Iran.

Like Iran gives a shit about Germany. The middle-east laughs at Europe. These 3rd world animals only respect one thing. Force and who is willing to exert it.

The UN will write up another sanction, then another, then another, until Iran cries UNcle.....never happen. Iran knows the UN is useless, they watched them sanction Iraq for years.

A couple of interesting things going on here.

First, that Iran has to do this. I mean, if Iran really has some massive, super-secret nuke program, then this little research reactor would be a mere side-note. By breaking these seals, Iran is telegraphing that its WMD program is smaller and further behind (perhaps by months) than our estimates.

Second, that Iran is being deliberately provocative right now. If they wanted to put the U.S. in a tight spot, the time to have done this would have been just before the most recent Iraqi elections (right when we needed/wanted peace in the region the most).

Funny how the term research is supposed to be a polite euphemism for assembling thermonuclear warheads. The necessary research was performed sixty years ago.

Well, it's not like we didn't see it coming. Now taking bets on who will have a backbone when it comes time to put Iran back in its place.

Not accepting any bets on France. That would just be cheating.

They have at least 12 years and at least 100 resolutions to go before anyone gets serious with them, eh?

I think Israel will not disappoint them and the only reason they haven't done so before now is some strong jaw-boning by Bush. It may not work with the new guy.

This may be true. There is a danger in assigning a rational motive to irrational people, though.

They might have just done it for the hell of it.

...agreed. Iran is behind schedule, won't have much of a nuclear offense and is deliberately trying to provoke a move from us/Israel. IMO, Israel should concentrate on improving defenses against missiles nonstop.

We in the USA will be out of Iran's range for a very long time, and nukes that could hurt many people are too large, obvious and heavy to smuggle in ("suitcase" nukes much exaggerated in smallness and damage potential by the media).

Even after correcting for the exaggeration, we are left with a deadly threat.

Morning KIA,
They must have been having delusions of grandeur to think a muslim or muslim country could be trusted.

Either we stop them or a nuke will come our way one day. I believe President Bush meant to say the "Religion of Piss" not peace.

The Un is nothing but a cluster of 90% anti-American countries, who would like nothing better than our demise.

I could not agree more and have said the same thing a hundred times.

Iran is probably looking at the UN saying "Sadaam defied you for twelve years WITHOUT nukes. We only need two or three more years and we will have nukes. Then we can do whatever we want."

This is why playing softball with these psychos is insane. They understand confrontation. Europe has forgotten it. As have a good portion of US politicians.
