I'm sorry, but any Officer worth his salt knows this is exactly the
wrong way to motivate the troops. There's nothing wrong with a good old fashioned dressing down, but to go beyond that is conduct unbecoming.
Abusing the troops under your command physically or mentally can and should get the CO relieved post haste.

I remember a boat in Pearl Harbor a few years ago where the CO was relived for bad crew morale.
