Al Gore's new television network, Current TV, is turning to Sean Penn, Robert Redford and others to give advice to fledgling filmmakers.
Current TV has been operating since August. The bulk of its programming is short films by young documentarians. Current says it wants contributions from audience members along with material it solicits.
To help would-be contributors, the network has just produced a "survival guide" that it is making available online that includes advice on journalism and storytelling from Redford and Penn, along with academics, authors and filmmakers.
"We, and by we I mean everyone from a Hollywood director like me to a teenager in rural Texas, can all tell stories about our hopes and fears," said Catherine Hardwicke, writer-director of the movie "Thirteen."
"Every day I'm intrigued and sometimes outraged by things that no one talks about," Hardwicke said. "Current is a chance to be heard, and send think-bombs out into the world."
Other participants include actor and screenwriter Bonz Malone, author Dave Eggers ("A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius") and Orville Schell, dean of the University of California, Berkeley Graduate School of Journalism.

Current TV has been operating since August. Hell, that should be the headline, I had no idea it was even on the air.

Is that the high point of the month or whenever? I think something is seriously wrong when the Democratic brass hats have to go to Hollywood for answers.

I honestly didn't realize this silly network was still on the air.
Does anyone here know anyone who actually WATCHES this channel? I received a flier from Direct TV, and I don't even think they list it in any of their programing packages.
I imagine the ratings for the test pattern with the picture of the Indian on it are better than anything on this channel.
To: wagglebee
Me too. It is the best kept secrete in media history.
Actually to help Al Gore out financially I think the CIA should consider buying network time to send its agents secure messages. Nobody would possibly intercept them.

We can't torture our own people!! We, and by we I mean everyone from a Hollywood director like me to a teenager in rural Texas, can all tell stories about our hopes and fears," said Catherine Hardwicke, writer-director of the movie "Thirteen." I'll give it a try! Hopes: that Gore, Penn, and Redford will all go hide under a rock and stop inflicting themselves on the rest of us. Fear: that they won't.

It's the Al Gore show everybody. And now, heeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeers Al!
To: wagglebee
