January 8, 2006 -- The Big Apple's "potty parity" law will be put into action for the first time. Wolfgang's Steakhouse, a 200-seat eatery at 407 Greenwich St., will be the first new establishment to open and be forced to comply with the new legislation. The result is that the eatery will have four stalls in the ladies room and two stalls and three urinals for the men.
The law, designed to solve the age-old problem of overcrowded ladies' facilities, covers new or renovated public spaces, including stadiums, theaters, dance halls, convention centers and drinking establishments.
It says that for every sit-down toilet in a men's room, there have to be two for the ladies.

Sounds great. If there's a line in the men's room, I'll just go use the ladies' room.
Payback, eh?
The net result will be fewer toilets in the men's room.
Doesn't sound like parity to me.... ;-)
Well, I know I'll sleep better tonight.
It is a major advance in sh*thousology. The legislative staffers who came up with it are to be given PhDs if they don't hold them already.
Tell the truth... if there were cushioned chairs in the men's room, would you sit on them?
I would make sure there was nothing on them first.
For that field of expertise, that must mean Piled Higher and Deeper...
I don't think I'd want to inspect them that closely! :)
Bathrooms are usually laid out according to probable usage.
There is a code to do this. For example, you would not try to achieve parity if the vast majority of the end users are either men or women.
And no, they are not laid out to make women walk further. Usually they are done so that they can utilize a plumbing riser.
And the seat WON'T be going up...:)
They only have so much space. When ADA wanted a larger stall , space was cut down for the other stalls. You can't turn around in some and your knees are by the door.
Speaking as a woman... yes.
From the article: "The result is that the eatery will have four stalls in the ladies room and two stalls and three urinals for the men."
So 5 "receptacles" for the men and 4 for the women. Even complying with this new "potty parity" law, men still have more facilities.
Doesn't sound like parity to me.... ;-)
You forgot the urinals in the mens room, in addition to the sit-down toilets. Don't worry, men will still be able to go pee pee. You just won't have to put up with fed-up women barging in.
Shoot, if there were cushioned chairs in the men's room I might be tempted to move in. ;^)
The lost sense of chivalry, no matter how unimportant this may have seemed to people, surprised me and made me smile. It was really infectious in that men took great pride in the fact that they put the ladies first, and the ladies appreciated it.
