Front Royal, Va, Jan. 06, 2006 (CNA) - Catholic Priest and president of Human Life International,Rev. Thomas J. Euteneuer, advised Democrats to refrain from Catholic bashing of Supreme Court nominee Judge Samuel Alito.
The unrelenting campaign waged by many Senate Democrats, some who claim to be Catholics themselves, against Catholic judicial nominees who embrace and practice their Catholic faith is disgraceful at best and at worst is a blatant form of religious bigotry reminiscent of a less civil period of history, said Fr. Euteneuer.
If these senators continue to Catholic bash in the upcoming nomination hearing for Supreme Court nominee Judge Samuel Alito they will only continue to alienate Roman Catholics who are increasingly frustrated over attacks on those beliefs they hold most dear.
Religion should never be used as a weapon of discrimination. Democrats and their anti-Catholic allies such as People for the American Way, Moveon.org and Alliance for Justice must abandon their Catholic bashing strategy.
It is time for these Senatorslead by the likes of Sen. Schumer (D-N.Y.) and Sen. Dick Durbin (D-Ill.)to put an end to this shameful behavior and offer their advice and consent based upon a nominees proper understanding of our Constitutional law.
It is in the best interest of all Americans that the Democrat Party stops its relentless attacks on Roman Catholic judicial nominees.
Founded in 1981, Human Life International is the world's largest pro-life, pro-family organization that is dedicated to defending life, faith and the family, with branches and affiliates around the world.

And Catholics, such as the ones living here in PA, need to stop pulling the "D" lever each and every time they cast a vote.

They, the Dims, can not stop bashing Roman Catholics. The only thing that will cause them to stop bashing Roman Catholics is Roman Catholics in larger numbers start voting GOP. Otherwise they are so beholden to the abortion advocates, Soros etc. that they must continue. Similarly for Jewish vote, as long as the Dims can support the Palis etc and not lose too high a percentage of Jewish voters, they won't support Israel any more. As long as the Dims can make being a Roman Catholic a suspect characteristic for judicial appointment and not lose too high a percentage of Roman Catholic voters, they will continue down this path.

What is most egregious is the violation of their oaths by certain Senators of this clause in the Constitution:
"The Senators and Representatives before mentioned, and the Members of the several State Legislatures, and all executive and judicial Officers, both of the United States and of the several States, shall be bound by Oath or Affirmation, to support this Constitution; but no religious Test shall ever be required as a Qualification to any Office or public Trust under the United States."

Some of the worst offenders are those claiming to be Catholic (Kennedy, Kerry, Biden, Durbin, etc.) who themselves bash the Church pandering for the pro-abortion vote.

I disagree with the strategy of using Catholicism as the reason for the "bashing". That plays into the hand of "Catholic bashing" in reverse. Catholic or otherwise, people have a right to be critical of other human beings. Kennedy, Kerry and others are "Catholic" however it is more prudent to be critical of what they are doing rather than to what system of beliefs they personally align themselves. You will find idiots in any religion.
I happen to think, Supreme Court nominee Judge Samuel Alito, is a fine man, Catholic or otherwise.

I have two things to say about your comment. One, they call those kind of people hypocrites, and two, isn't it a shame that those who are pro-abortion weren't themselves aborted?

They need to start excommunicating those Democrats who are bashing their own (Catholic) religion or which support behaviors that are not in line with the teachings of the church.
Chicago has a rule that you have to live in the city to work in the city. Why not a rule in the church that says you have to follow the doctrines of the church to say you belong to the denomination?
To: BW2221
The four you mention should be excommunicated. Yes the Fat boy who bought an annullment, and the Traitor who loves abortion , The bug eyed creature who is all for killing the unborn, They all should be excommunicated.
To: NYer
This isn't really "Catholic" bashing.
We are all in this together.
Maybe if we all worked together in this we could get something done.
Alito may be Catholic, but his "sin" in the eyes of the life-takers is being pro-life, not simply Catholic.

Christ repeatedly spoke out against the hypocrites of his time. It's time for the Catholic church to begin following His example.
Of course the Catholic Church has spent too much time and (parishioner's) money covering up their own problems. They're in a situation where their behavior has been hypocritical as well.
To: Victoria Delsoul
I'm not Catholic by any means, theologically, in some ways, that is, but also support Fr. Eutenuer's conclusion. Way to stand for the truth, Father.

Last I checked, Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger (now pope) stated in 2004 that he could not excommunicate Kerry because he already incurred excommunication. I presume that the same fate applies to most other Democrats who purport to profess Catholicism while really bashing Catholics and Catholic doctrine from the floor of the Congress.
