HARRISBURG -- Former Pittsburgh Steeler Lynn Swann got a surprisingly big win in a Republican Party caucus vote yesterday, which chased one of his challengers from the GOP gubernatorial race and gave a big boost to his five-day-old candidacy.

Two hours after state Sen. Jeffrey Piccola, R-Dauphin, told the Republican State Committee's Central Caucus that he was ending his struggling campaign for the GOP nomination for governor, Mr. Swann trounced his major remaining competitor, former Lt. Gov. William Scranton, in a bid for the caucus's endorsement.

This is going to be fun. I can't wait to see how this plays out in Philly.

Will Swann be a significant boost to Santorum in his reelection race for the Senate?

Did I miss Lynn Swann's campaign website? Has he articulated what he believes and will fight for/against?

Swann really does appear to be the conservative here. Nice to see the celebrity not being the RINO.

Just as an aside, Swann was born in Alcoa, Tennessee. That little public school of about 400 students has appeared in the last 5 high school championship games (though maybe a semifinals one year--not sure), winning three of them and has produced 3 D-I signees this year, including one to Florida State and one to Tennessee.

Their crosstown rival, Maryville (larger school, different division), has won 5 out 6 state titles.

Amazing the amount of talent that comes out of that area. I used to live in Knoxville, so I was more than famililar with their programs. Top notch acts.

Couldn't hurt - unless Swann turns out to be a terrible candidate.

Lynn could become another demorat lightning rod. However, if he does, the demorats will alienate a lot of NFL supporters. :)

Good! Let 'em do it. The DIMorats already think NASCAR fans are all rednecks. I can't wait to see how they'll offend the NFL fans.

Good, one for the conservative, a big goose-egg for the new age hippie.

I know some people in Temple's Economics club don't necessarily agree with that. Also, I believe that many folks at the Commonwealth Foundation preferred Scranton and consider Swann a "moderate".

Personally, I think Swann has a far better chance than Scranton of knocking off Rendell. I think Fast Eddie suddenly got a little nervous today.... I like Swann, and I am certainly going to give the man a chance to make himself clear on the issues. One thing I already like is that he is talking tax cuts.

Regards,
LH
