Garden City teacher held for alleged sex with student

GARDEN CITY, Kan. - A teacher has been arrested on allegations that she had a sexual relationship with a 16-year-old student.

Nadine Nunnelee, 40, of Garden City, was taken into custody Wednesday at Garden City High School, said police Capt. Mike Utz. She had not yet been charged Thursday, Finney County Attorney John Wheeler Jr. said. Utz said police working on an unrelated runaway case became aware of Nunnelee's alleged affair. She is accused of hosting the male student at her home between Dec. 17 and Dec. 25.

Police said the relationship appeared to be consensual. The age of consent in Kansas is 16, but state law makes it illegal for a teacher to have sexual contact with a student who is 16 or 17 and enrolled at the teacher's school.

A judge ordered Nunnelee held on $15,000 bond Thursday, said Wheeler, and she was prohibited from having contact with the teen she allegedly victimized.

School officials have suspended Nunnelee, who is in her second year with the district, with pay. Utz said he was not aware of Nunnelee obtaining a lawyer. She was not reachable for comment.

It wasn't too long ago that this behavior was very rare. It's time the judges in our country start sentencing these women to the same prison terms that men face when convicted. Some say that it's no big deal because the boys think of it as a coup. It doesn't matter what they think, they're minors. If you read the laws governing such criminal acts, they don't differentiate between male and female perpetrators.
