Tour guide trussell

Welcome back to the tour of Mesa Verde. Today we will be visiting the Spruce Tree House Ruin and the Museum. Follow me through the "Doorway of time"

This is called a Cliff Dwelling. The cliff is formed by the runoff of water from rain or melting snow. The cliffs are sandstone and shale. The water runs through the sandstone until it hits the shale. It forms puddles and then freezes, expanding and causing the stone to break.

This is at the head of the trail that starts behind the museum. This ruin is called The Spruce Tree House. It was named for the tree that the Wetherill's climbed down to reach the dwelling. It should have been called Douglas Fur House as it was a Douglas Fur they used, not a Blue Spruce.  The tree was later cut down to examine the age based on tree ring dating.

Learn more about Mesa Verde Here: Mesa Verde National Park

There are links on that site where you can ask to receive touring information about the Four Corners Area, and especially the SW corner of Colorado. Tell them Tracy sent you :)

This is the Court yard of the Spruce Tree House Ruin. Those branches that are coming out of that hole are the poles of a ladder. They lead down into a Kiva.

Here is another view of the same ladder...

Those holes in the wall ahead look like windows, but they are doors that lead to rooms where the people slept. They people who lived here spent most of their time in the court yard and on the surface above the cliffs. They were farmers, and tended their crops. They had very little water in the caves and usually had to haul water great distances for cooking and drinking.

This is a kiva, without the roof. On the surface, above the tunnel type hole you see here is where air came into the kiva. It is called the ventilation shaft. The air hit the deflector shield, which is the stone that is in front of the lower hole, and that moved the air around the kiva and pushed the warmer smoky air up through the entrance.

The fire was lit in the pit in the middle of the room. The ladder went over the fire and out through the hole in the roof. It was thought that smoke was cleansing, so the men went through the smoke to exit the kiva.

There are six pillars around the kiva. These pillars supported the roof of the Kiva, which was also the floor of the courtyard. The area that looks like shelves is actually benches.

About half of the kivas in Mesa Verde have a small hole in the floor. This is called a sipapu. This is thought to represent a link from the third world, leading to the 4th world...here.

Only the men and older boys were allowed to go into the Kivas. The women and younger children stayed on the surface. The men were kept warm by the fires, the women and children were kept warm with turkey feather blankets and hide blankets.

Here we are at the museum, shall we go inside?

These dioramas show some of the ways the people of Mesa Verde lived. In the beginning, they were nomads...they hunted and traveled. When they reached Mesa Verde, they decided to settle down.

They have been called the "Anasazi" for many years, but Anasazi means "ancient enemy" so history is being rewritten to call them "Ancestral Puebloans"

This beautiful pottery is called "Black on white" and was made by the Ancestral Puebloans. They used plants to make the black paint and their paint brush was a leaf from a yucca plant.

This is the amateur archeologist who came in to help excavate the ruins of Mesa Verde. He documented everything he saw and wrote a wonderful book called "Cliff Dwellers of the Mesa Verde" by Gustaf Nordenskiold.

The tied bundles of what looks like grass were used as hair brushes. The rings were used to hold pots that were made with rounded bases.

Take your time and wander through the museum...this will be the end of today's session. We'll pick up from here next time.

The Options

Read:
Luke 16:19-31

Being in torments in Hades, he lifted up his eyes. —Luke 16:23

Bible In One Year: Genesis 13-15; Matthew 5:1-26

cover Last time I checked, nobody likes having problems—problems with money, problems with cars, problems with computers, problems with people, problems with health. We would all prefer a life with as few difficulties as possible.

So, if you were to offer people the choice between (1) a future totally free of problems, sorrow, tears, and pain, and (2) a future full of pain, suffering, regret, and anguish—they would choose option one, right?

Jesus died on the cross to give us opportunity to experience that option. If we repent of our sins and trust Him as our Savior, He has promised us a life of fellowship with God in a place the Bible calls heaven. A place with no problems. A place where there are no more tears.

People living in a problem-filled world ought to be standing in line to grab that offer. Unfortunately, many haven't heard the good news; others have refused to trust Christ. When people die without Jesus, it's too late to take the offer, and they go to a place of torment the Bible calls hell.

Do you hate trouble and pain? Turn to Jesus and accept His offer of forgiveness. Your problems in this world won't disappear, but you'll reserve a home in heaven—a place of eternal joy and peace with God. —Dave Branon

Jesus is calling, "Today you must choose!"
If you delay, you surely will lose;
Listening now, you can hear the Lord's voice,
Take His salvation—make heaven your choice! —Hess

You must accept God's Son today if you want to live in heaven's sunshine tomorrow.
