With O’Reilly as Guest, Very Serious Letterman Denounces Iraq War & Hails Sheehan
NewsBusters ^ | January 3, 2006 | Brent Baker

Posted on 01/03/2006 9:20:35 PM PST by PJ-Comix

Displaying a hostility to President Bush and the Iraq war similar to that expressed by Comedy Central’s Jon Stewart, on tonight’s Late Show David Letterman will go further than I’ve ever heard him in revealing his derision for President Bush’s decision to launch the Iraq war. I know this thanks to the “Big Show Highlight," a two-minute streaming-only RealPlayer preview of tonight’s program, which is now featured on the Late Show’s home page.

In the posted clip, Letterman mockingly tells guest Bill O’Reilly: "The President himself, less than a month ago said we are there because of a mistake made in intelligence. Well, whose intelligence? It was just somebody just get off a bus and handed it to him?" Letterman demands: “Why the Hell are we there to begin with?" When O’Reilly points out that the British, Russians and Egyptians also presumed Iraq had WMD, Letterman retorts: “Well then that makes it all right?" Turning unusually serious, Letterman soon lectures: “I'm very concerned about people like yourself who don't have nothing but endless sympathy for a woman like Cindy Sheehan. Honest to Christ. Honest to Christ." That prompts O’Reilly to contend: “No way a terrorist who blows up women and children is going to be called a ‘freedom fighter' on my program." To which Letterman fires back: “I have the feeling about 60 percent of what you say is crap.” After the show airs in an hour, I will update this item with more from the Letterman/O’Reilly exchange, including a video clip. (Transcript of RealPlayer excerpt follows.)

It took me a while, but I managed to take down this transcript from the two-minute streaming RealPlayer “Big Show Highlight” video clip on the Late Show home page:

David Letterman: “The President himself, less than a month ago said we are there because of a mistake made in intelligence. Well, whose intelligence? It was just somebody just get off a bus and handed it to him?”

Bill O’Reilly: “No.”

Letterman: “No, it was the intelligence gathered by his administration.”

O’Reilly: “By the CIA.”

Letterman: “Yeah, so why are we there in the first place? I agree to you, with you that we have to support the troops. They are there, they are the best and the brightest of this country. [audience applause] There’s no doubt about that. And I also agree that now we’re in it it’s going to take a long, long time. People who expect it’s going to be solved and wrapped up in a couple of years, unrealistic, it’s not going to happen. However, however, that does not eliminate the legitimate speculation and concern and questioning of ‘Why the Hell are we there to begin with?’”

O’Reilly: “If you want to question that, and then re-vamp an intelligence agency that’s obviously flawed, the CIA, okay. But remember, MI-6 in Britain said the same thing. Putin’s people in Russia said the same thing, and so did Mubarak’s intelligence agency in Egypt.”

Letterman: “Well then that makes it all right?”

O’Reilly: “No it doesn’t make it right.”

Letterman: “That intelligence agencies across the board makes it alright that we’re there?”

O’Reilly: “It doesn’t make it right.”

Letterman: “See, I’m very concerned about people like yourself who don’t have nothing but endless sympathy for a woman like Cindy Sheehan. Honest to Christ.” [audience applause]

O’Reilly: “No, I’m sorry.”

Letterman: “Honest to Christ.”

“O’Reilly: “No way. [waits for applause to die down] No way you’re going to get me, no way that a terrorist who blows up women and children.”

Letterman: “Do you have children?”

O’Reilly: “Yes I do. I have a son the same age as yours. No way a terrorist who blows up women and children is going to be called a ‘freedom fighter’ on my program.” [mild audience applause]

Letterman: “I’m not smart enough to debate you point to point on this, but I have the feeling, I have the feeling about 60 percent of what you say is crap. [audience laughter] But I don’t know that for a fact. [more audience applause]

Letterman often talkes about his 2 yr old kid and the
unmarried mother of it.
When you watch his body language he looks like someone
who is not sure of himself.

You said it, David - you are not smart enough. And you are a typical liberal: "I have the feeling." Feelings, not facts, is what you folks live by.

I have never heard this guy say anything I thought was funny. Cannot understand why his show is still on. ???

That should end it though. Firing on our pilots was an act of war. And Hussein didn't do it just once but literally thousands of times. 9/11 taught us, or should have taught us, that when someone declares war on you either by word or deed, you have no choice but to respond in kind. The invasion of Iraq in 2003 was simply a response to that new or, more accurately, old reality.

You mean Letterman's still doing a night time show? I thought he'd retired by now. I never noticed.

:)

We are being lectured by a guy who's first child was born out of wedlock.

The Resume
(April 12, 1947- )
Born in Indianapolis, Indiana
Late night talk show host on NBC and then CBS
Weatherman

Why he might be annoying
He told an embarrassing UMA-OPRAH. joke when he hosted the Academy Awards.
He smokes cigars.
He is a vegetarian.
He earned a multitude of speeding violations.
He has problems getting close to anyone.
He is germ phobic.
He hates to be touched especially near his neck.
He had his first child, a son, while in his fifties, and out of wedlock

Carsons' choice was Letterman but it wasn't his choice to make.

Letterman is an idiot, he just turned off 50% of his audience. Facts don't matter when we run into PC.

We can't run this country based on hindsight, because then it would be too late. People like Letterman and Sheehan are going to get us all killed.

And wasn't a lot of that intelligence gathered under the Clinton adminnistration?

Poor Letterman. I used to actually like the guy. But now, his brain has been brainwashed by the rats & Old Media.
I was truly saddened watching the show.

Too bad that bore Letterman was upstaged tonight by the WV coalminer rescue and the Orange Bowl game.

I'm sure his ratings were very low tonight.

Blather on, Dave. No one is listening.

Way to treat a GUEST Letterman - stick your pencil in their coffee before they come out, act rude, dismissive and call them a liar. What an A-Hole.

Reminds me of the time when Tom Selleck was on Rosie O'Donnell's show plugging a movie he was in - and all she did was yell at him about his affiliation with the NRA.

I wrote a dozen letters that day.

GUEST!!! I totally agree with you!

I was surprised to hear that BO'R decided to go on his show. I saw The Factor briefly tonight and BO'R told his audience it was a must see.

I'm on the West Coast - so, I still have 90+ minutes to go. May have to tivo it.

Yawn.

Excellent observation. Probably what others are sensing but not putting into words.

Reveals Letterboy as a Bush hater.

And O'Reilly is only conservative relative to other hosts - he certainly upsets Freepers with regularity.

When he couldn't argue with O'Reilly, he just said that he thought about 60% of what he says is just crap.

O'Reilly should have just walked off the stage.

Yep, what I find most amazing is how George W. Bush is able to drag these liberals out from under their covers after years of anonymity :-)

Who would have guessed that Letterman was on par with Howard Dean and Nancy Pelosi 8 years ago when Slick Willy was exposed for hiding a Cuban in an Intern?

Just like in Texas, George W. Bush knows how to drive the Liberals crazy, even the covert ones :-)

O'Reilly should have just walked off the stage.

No, he needs to stay on stage and let Letterman continue with his diatribe against him. It opens a window to the audience showing them who he is.

"Leno's also a lib, but he's not as stupid about it as Dave Letterman."

I agree Leno is funnier but probably just as stupid. I quit watching Leno when he started trashing Linda Tripp for phone eavesdropping and taping.
This by the same guy who admitted hiding in an NBC executive closet to find out if his contract was going to be renewed.
Talk about selective righteousness.
