HARRISBURG, Pa. -- A big day awaits Lynn Swann on Wednesday.
The former Pittsburgh Steelers star and veteran college football analyst for ABC Sports is expected to kick off his political career by declaring his candidacy for Pennsylvania's governorship.
Swann planned to open a three-day state tour at a rally in Pittsburgh.
Swann, a wide receiver for the Steelers, was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2001.
Aides declined to confirm the purpose of the tour, but Swann's political committee -- Team 88, named after his football jersey number -- has been raising money for 11 months. Swann has billed himself as a prospective candidate while courting GOP activists across the state.
"It might be easy to assume" the subject of Swann's announcement, acknowledged his campaign spokeswoman, Melissa Walters, who also referred to the upcoming flyover as an "announcement tour."
The 53-year-old Swann will be the last of the Republican hopefuls to make his candidacy official. Already declared are former Lieutenant Governor Bill Scranton, state Senator Jeffrey Piccola and retired business advocate Jim Panyard.
I don't know for sure, but I would assume strong leadership skills, strong oral communication skills, strong analysis skills.
Good. This is one candidate I am individually contributing to. Blank donations to RNC are out.
I look forward to helping on his campaign,if he decides to run.
"So, does he have any other qualifications? "
He's not Fast Eddy Rendell. That's good enough for me.
It's bye bye Fast Eddie!
you should volunteer for Swann's campaign.
Yes.
He's a Republican.
He stands a good chance to beat Rendell.

Do half the people serving in Congress have any qualifications when they were elected???
Judging from the speeches I have seen on C-span---especially late night...I would guess a lot haven't.
What do you consider a qualification...to hold public office in a city or county capacity first?? To be a lawyer, or have a poly sci degree??
I am not trying to be arguementative or facetious...I really am curious...because I really don't know myself.
I \may. Although I read in an editorial by a republican that several months ago he was visiting some college (Shippensburg) and some people asked for his autograph and he would not give it. Might have been good for his image to give them. I will see.

I'm very proud of what black Republicans are accomplishing in this country. Steele, Swann and the rest show more guts in just showing up than Specter and other RINOs have mustered in their whole carriers. Thats the kind of courage we need.
I know that I heard JC Watts tell Hannity a while back that the Black Congressional Caucus gave him a hard time when he was in the House...
So...just like Jesse Jackson would tell you...black people have to work HARDER...but, he won't say it is because black people make black people have to work harder...
While I have not been a big football fan lately , while growing up Swann was one of my heroes.
Okay...do you remember the guy that was running against Jean Schmitt in Ohio??
He was a newly returned veteran of the Iraq war...and from what I saw that was HIS ONLY "qualifications"...and yet...
I honestly saw a blurb on Fox the other day..that said that HE might run against DeWine for the Senate and COULD win.
Now..wouldn't that be a kicker..for him to lose in the HOUSE race..only to become a Senator??
I don't see where he is any more qualified than Swann, IMHO>
I think he told the other announcers. They told him we are behind you 100% and you can count on us.
I'm glad no one told Ronald Reagan that when he ran for Gov. in California.
