A Day In The Life.... with our Host, Old Sarge
Greetings to all you good people out there on FreeRepublic! Sarge is reporting today from the Fobbit Hole in the rich bottom lands of the Euphrates River Valley! And today with the able help of our own dear StarCMC, Sarge is pleased to take you all on a little tour of what life is like here on the FOB!
|
This is the Company Yard! This is what the yard looks like, where we live and relax a bit before going out to do that voodoo we do so well. You can see the Fobbit Hole on the left edge, just under Loveshack's UK flag. The chairs are out for porch-sittin' in good weather. The chair up on the roof is where Sarge will watch the sunset and the stars, or the Kids playing basketball on the half-court just off the right edge. And, if you turn your head a little, just over that berm is The Outside. Sometimes out of sight, but never out of mind...
|
You've all seen the small towns, where they have a cannon or a tank parked outside the courthouse? Well, your troops like to put out what we've relieved from the custody of the bad guys. Looking at it, this kind of reminds me of the bottle rocket tubes the brothers and I used to light off - only They aren't too particular about where it lands... A while ago, we took a mortar round on the base, and it went right through the steel Conex you see here, and blew inside. You can see how the whole thing expanded like a can of soda on the stove. We left it here, as a reminder... |
This is the door to Machine Gun Joe's, the local MWR hangout for the troops. It's open 24/7, there's a gym and an Internet cafe' next door, and they do all sorts of things here - church services, unit parties, movie nights, it's always got something going on. Sarge has been known to stop by and drink a few near-beers with folks who have the time. I swear it was like this when I got here... Honest... I disavow any knowledge... |
Now, some of you are probably thinking, "Well, that's all nice and fluffy, Sarge, but what about the stuff that REAL soldiers do? Well, your troops are ALWAYS doing something - like prepping these M1A2's for an upcoming mission... And, these guys are ALWAYS busy, flying missions on and off the base - that's how Sarge got here in the first place, you know... |
You'll often see a bunch of these beasts, as well - AH-64 Apache's, off doing various and sundry things... And these old warhorses, the AH-1 Cobras that your Marines just don't seem to want to get rid of. It's kind of interesting, that even in this day and age, the old war-wagons of bygone decades are STILL in service all over the place, just like a lot of old soldiers - just goes to show that there's still some tread on the old bald tires... |
The view from atop the Fobbit Hole is, well, I'll let the pics say it better... Now, with all the things we do over here, making sure that the newborn Iraqi nation gets the best possible head-start, we still get a chance to gaze at the promise of a sunset - and a new day tomorrow.
And we can all still make and find time to just enjoy each others' company, like here, for example, with a marathon game of "Axis and Allies". Here, from left to right: The Vulcan, Old Sarge, and Big Sexy watch as the Blue-eyed Devil makes his move against Scary, who doesn't look too happy at this point. Behind us, Cool B is raiding the munchie counter, oblivious to the raging battle nearby...
|
Folks, there just aren't as many action shots, or kicked-in doors, or all the HOOAH! things that other threads may put out, but I can assure you of this: the Kids of the Company are specialists who perform missions that if they don't happen, a lot of HOOAH's might not make it home alive. So remember the soldiers who build and fix things, who can reprogram computers, who can string LAN cables, who can patch wounds as well as vehicles, or who watch the enemy in the night - these are soldiers, too. And they thank you good folks for all the memories you give them. THANK YOU FOR YOUR SUPPORT, GOOD PEOPLE! Old Sarge

Dark Light
Even what was made glorious had no glory in this respect, because of the glory that excels. 2 Corinthians 3:10
|
In some ways the Mosaic law is to the Christian what a crutch is to an athlete. It is good when needed and used properly. But a crutch cannot be employed to win a 100-yard dash, nor can leaning on a system of legal statements ever bring us spiritual victory.
Paul emphasized the diminishing splendor of the Old Testament law by comparing it to the surpassing glory of life and liberty in the Spirit. Referring to Moses' shining face after he had been given the Ten Commandments, the apostle likened the fading brightness of his countenance to the temporary and incomplete nature of the Sinai disclosures he had received. The people of Israel would soon discover that God's message from the mount was also the standard by which they would be condemned.
Where the Holy Spirit reigns, however, there is abundant grace, and its splendor far exceeds that of the law. Imagine lighting a match in a completely dark place. The sudden burst of flame provides an impressive display of light. But if you struck a match in the presence of the noonday sun, its flickering rays would seem insignificant.
The commandments were demanding and ultimately they condemned; but life in the Spirit brings the experience of God's transforming power into our heart. Mart De Haan
The law in itself is pure and good
And shows to us which way is right,
But grace has a glory that excels,
Flooding our path with Christ's true light. Bosch
The diminishing splendor of the law is no match for the glory of God's grace.

Sarge, would you please pass this on to your comrades??
Heroes A hero is someone who gets up every day and does his job day after day, week after week, No matter what life throws at them. Some are recognized by others But most are not. It doesn't matter to the real heroes. They just keep doing their jobs Even if no one notices. The fake heroes, tooting their own horns are motivated by recognition Not by the love of doing what is right. With every little act A real hero touches the lives of so many, And yet they may never realize That they truly are worthy To be called HERO. StarCMC 12/28/05 For my heroes. |
