More than a week after the story was exposed as a hoax, Sen. Ted Kennedy has yet to apologize for touting false claims from a University of Massachusetts student who said officials from the Department of Homeland Security visited his home and repeatedly interrogated him after he tried to obtain a copy of Mao Tse-Tung's "Little Red Book."
In mid-December, the unidentified student instigated the hoax by describing the phony grilling to reporters for the New Bedford Standard-Times. The story appeared on Dec. 17, the day after the New York Times reported that the Bush administration was monitoring the phone calls of U.S. residents suspected of communicating with terrorists abroad.
In a Dec. 22 op-ed piece for the Boston Globe, however, Kennedy conflated the Times report along with the U. Mass student's bogus allegation to blast the Bush administration for what he insisted was an illegal invasion of privacy.
"Just this past week," Kennedy wrote, "there were public reports that a college student in Massachusetts had two government agents show up at his house because he had gone to the library and asked for the official Chinese version of Mao Tse-tung's Communist Manifesto. Following his professor's instructions to use original source material, this young man discovered that he, too, was on the government's watch list."
"Incredibly," the top Democrat fumed, "we are now in an era where reading a controversial book may be evidence of a link to terrorists." He demanded "a thorough and independent investigation of these activities."
However, on Dec. 24 the Times-Standard reported:
"The UMass Dartmouth student who claimed to have been visited by Homeland Security agents over his request for 'The Little Red Book' by Mao Zedong has admitted to making up the entire story."
The revelation left Sen. Kennedy uncharacteristically silent.
Asked if he shouldn't have verified the incendiary account before citing it in print, Kennedy spokeswoman Laura Capps insisted to the Boston Globe: "Even if the assertion was a hoax, it did not detract from Kennedy's broader point that the Bush administration has gone too far in engaging in surveillance."
not too many know of her and this sad kennedy episode.
scum on earth these kennedys.
Last summer (2005), I was standing on a bridge in Chappaquiddick, and I saw Ted Kennedy driving an Oldsmobile, drunk as a skunk. He had a young lady in the car with him. He failed to negotiate a turn properly, and the car ended up going into the water. Ted never tried to save the woman, but was able to extricate his fat body from the car, whereupon he swam safely to shore. He then called several friends and relatives and tried to get them to say that one of them was actually driving the car.
Okay, I made the story up. It's a hoax. But it does not detract from my broader point that the senior Senator from Massachusetts is a fat, conniving, chronically inebriated, womanizing, cowardly murderer.
When he stands at the podium on the Senate floor and opens his mouth on any subject, he is so pathetic, I almost feel sorry for him. I wrote "almost."
Fat Teddy's spokesman sounds like Dan the Man Rather. It's amazing how the rules of common sense and decency never apply to Liberals.
Only Democrats can cite knowingly false anecdotes to bolster their ideals. They live in a fantasy world where Communism will still work (it only it could be properly instituted), polls are real and votes are not and accusations, even if false, are always credible if they fit the template about how evil Bush is.
"...it did not detract from Kennedy's broader point that the Bush administration has gone too far in engaging in surveillance."
Kenne (hic), Kenne (hic), Kennedrunk has a broader point? His girth, maybe?
Honestly, I cannot fathom how someone whose daily life consists of being intoxicated can make logical statements. His brain and liver are affected.
What is truly problematic is the way in which false charges, hoaxes, fake statistics and outright lies are published or aired by the liberal media, and then are continually cited as evidence to prove left-wing talking points, long after these falsehoods have been discredited. When a political point of view is totally bereft of logic, lies become the only weapon available.
The strange thing about this hoax is that no one can seem to find out the name of the student. I doubt there was a student at all who instigated this fraud and deception. I submit that it was the Dartmouth college professor who invented the entire tale, and I hope he is being investigated.
Leave it to Whale Kennedy to swallow it hook, line, and sinker. That's what whales do, isn't it?
>>>Ah, the CBS defense....<<<
The rallying cry of the terminally meretricious. Even though it was a lie, it was true.
"Kennedy spokeswoman Laura Capps insisted to the Boston Globe: "Even if the assertion was a hoax, it did not detract from Kennedy's broader point that the Bush administration has gone too far in engaging in surveillance."
Alllrightythen. Why doesn't this work for her, too?
Kennedy spokeswoman Laura Capps insisted to the Boston Globe: "Even if the intelligence on WMD was faulty, it did not detract from Bush's broader point that the Hussein administration has gone too far in ignoring UN resolutions and violating the "Food for Oil Program" and was an overall menace to the region and the rest of the world.
But...but....it has to be true because Tubby Teddy said it was.....you don't suppose that fat, larda$$ed POS would lie, do you?.....Mary Jo who?....he did?....wow...he really is a liar, isn't he?
The unfortunate thing is that it's effective and they know it. Being gullible and intellectually indolent is easy and lots of sheeple are more than willing to consume those lies.
Game, set, match!
So do I!!!
I know I am preaching to the choir but I cannot refrain from bad mouthing this pig Kennedy one more time, the sorry lying sleaze bag.
Kennedy hired the kid to plant the story, so he could use it in his "indignation" hit piece on the Bush Administration.
Of course he wouldn't apologize. That would compromise his integrity, and show to all the other operatives that his word was not reliable.
Dick Cheney personally came to my house , tied me to a chair and used a car battery on my............hold on the NY Times is knocking on my door.
