PRESIDENTIAL NEWS OF THE DAY: President Bush, the First Lady, the dogs and cat, and their family are spending the New Year's holiday at their Texas ranch.
On this New Year's Eve, 2005, although mindful of those who will not continue the journey with us into 2006, it seemed to me we should celebrate happy times. That is the theme of this last Dose thread of 2005.
QUOTE OF THE DAY: From the first Inaugural Address of President George W. Bush, January 20, 2001.
Americans are generous and strong and decent, not because we believe in ourselves, but because we hold beliefs beyond ourselves. When this spirit of citizenship is missing, no government program can replace it. When this spirit is present, no wrong can stand against it.After the Declaration of Independence was signed, Virginia statesman John Page wrote to Thomas Jefferson: ``We know the race is not to the swift nor the battle to the strong. Do you not think an angel rides in the whirlwind and directs this storm?''
Much time has passed since Jefferson arrived for his inauguration. The years and changes accumulate. But the themes of this day he would know: our nation's grand story of courage and its simple dream of dignity.
We are not this story's author, who fills time and eternity with his purpose. Yet his purpose is achieved in our duty, and our duty is fulfilled in service to one another.
Never tiring, never yielding, never finishing, we renew that purpose today, to make our country more just and generous, to affirm the dignity of our lives and every life.
This work continues. This story goes on. And an angel still rides in the whirlwind and directs this storm.
Here in Southern California we are having something very, very unsual for us on New Year's, and that's cold, rainy weather.
I honestly don't have a sense of it yet. Historically, the out-of-power party picks up seats in in the mid-terms, but that wasn't true in '02. As always, much depends on who is more energized to get out and vote.
Love the Barney graphic
Happy New Year to you! How is your dad coping with the loss of your mum? And how are you? I read of the difficulty you've had in making arrangements; that can't help but make a tough situation more difficult. Maybe your mum is in heaven having tea with my grandmother by now? That is a nice thought.
Wow, that fits dubya to a 'T'.
Yes, three behind eastern time zone. The "lower 48" states have four time zones, eastern, central, mountain and Pacific.
Sorry about the jerk--I'm sure you got the best of him/her. :-)
THANKS for all the great pictures--I love the one of G&L holding hands at the Black Tie and Boots ball. There was specultaion that Laura was wearing boots with that dress; do you know if she was?
Hi mystery. Happy New Year to you as well. (Thanks for the cute Scottie graphic.) I hope 2006 brings you excellent health and a basketful of happiness.
I've been saving that for wolfstar...
Hello ilovew-
What have you been up to?
I'm with you in thinking people will realize the dims are looney . . . but somehow, I'm always shocked at some people's ignorance.
That means a lot coming from you, snugs.
I am doing OK thanks dad has his good and bad days obviously new year is making him somewhat reflective.
Doesn't it. I'm just amazed by how IF fits GWB. Kipling was born in 1865 and died in 1936, ten years before GWB was born. Yet it almost seems as if he wrote IF specifically for GWB.
Grin...it was one of those rare times when I just gave up. The twit simply could not be reasoned with and clearly just wanted to argue.
Wolfie, thanks for this New Year's Eve edition of the Dose.
Snugs, Happy New Year a few minutes late, but heartfelt.
And it is most appreciated. Believe it.
Just got done reading the thread....job well done...thank you
Happy New Year, kitkat. You're welcome for this New Year's Eve Dose. I'm listening to Willie Nelson sing "Blue Skies," so I'll borrow a sentiment from the song. May the year ahead have nothing blue skies for you and yours.
