Hey everyone -

This seems like a good time to finally introduce myself. I've been a lurker since I discovered Free Republic, around the time of the Clinton mess - and I've been hooked ever since. It's the first site I look at in the morning and the last one I check at night - just to see if I'm missing anything. I've never bothered to post because someone always says something I would have said anyway, so I've been content to lurk. Still, I feel like part of the FR family so here I am.

Thanks to everyone - I love the sarcastic humor, the great information, even the stupid spats that spring up from time to time. May this year bring us the happy sight of the rats who leaked to the NY Times being frog-marched in handcuffs to prison where they belong and a grand scandal that will ruin Hildebeast's chances once and for all.

My New Year's resolution is to jump in and post this year - I guess my 2 cents is as good as anyone else's! HAPPY NEW YEAR EVERYBODY!!!

If you enjoy poetry and reflection meditation and prayers and support for the military please look into the finest. Both of these threads are linked from FR home page.

Thanks for the thread. My fervent hope for 2006, is that the concepts that make conservatism what it is, would be more clearly defined and adhered to by our leaders who claim to be conservative.

Are those your cats? They are adorable!

Yes, thank you! They have been so much fun, and they're much easier to care for than a hubby is. They confine their mess to the litter box and if you have them neutered, they don't prowl. If only I could have neutered the ex. LOL Happy New Year!

A Real Life or Death, New Years Resolution

Why would a smoker rather DIE than QUIT!

Decisions, decisions, decisions. Why do some people smoke?

Why do people start smoking when there is such credible evidence: that smoking cigarettes is unambiguously, harmful to ones health, with countless messages everywhere decrying the long-term effects of using tobacco?

An even better question is: what would bring an intelligent human to make a decision to start, or continue a ghastly, annoying, and expensive habit, that  unquestionably causes damage to their delicate body parts, a habitual action that directly impacts the quality of their life, makes them sick, stink, causes their own friends, family, and strangers to shirk from their presence, and as a kicker, shortens their own miserable existence?

Well, my dear friends, I  not only offend you with these annoying questions, I also offer a  host of answers that may, I dare say, will, astound you. I have the relatively simple solutions as well.

First and foremost, who or what are smokers, you know the ones I mean, those creatures hiding under the bridges and lurking in dark doorways and back alleys, those folks are real live people, real human people with feelings.

Smokers are taxpayers, neighbors, your father, mother, sibling, even your own otherwise cherished children. In other words, they are our family, our fellow Americans, and as such, we owe them more than a smidgin of respect and at least a bit of compassion and understanding..

Would it surprise you if I told you that all of the harassment, and all of the pressure society places on smokers only causes a deeper resentment, bruised personal relationships, and severe mental stress, but few if any smoking converts. No additional sales tax, banning laws or constant nagging, will convince a person that wants to continue smoking, to change their mind.

If I told you that the most insidious nature of smoking is not the addiction to Nicotine, as most would have you believe. More folks are continuing to smoke because it is the habit of smoking cigarettes that hooks them. It is just the habit, albeit a very bad habit. Smoking is just a learned habit that has been so embedded into your life by sheer numbers and conditioning, that it has taken a place deep in your psyche and entrenched into every aspect of your daily routine..

Wake up, light a cigarette, pour a cup of coffee, light up a cigarette. Drive out of the driveway, light up a cigarette, pick up the telephone, light up, and the most destructive behavior of them all, take a break, light up a cigarette..

Replacing the light-up routine and associating your period of relaxation and rest from stress with smoking is the single most compelling reason that most folks can’t imagine living without their cigarettes. Unfortunately, the chemical reaction of burning paper-wrapped tobacco, aside from nicotine, actually promotes anxiety, and tension, and is far from soothing..

There are over 4,000 chemicals in tobacco smoke. Nicotine, tar and carbon monoxide are well known. Everyone already knows that Nicotine is an addictive, dangerous, and destructive drug. However, few know that Tar created from burning tobacco, is a black, sticky substance that builds a layer within your lungs and nasal passages and damages your entire respiratory system. Tar from smoking cigarettes is the main cause of lung and throat cancer in smokers.

Carbon monoxide, the same gas that is found in car exhaust fumes, is the gas that hitches a ride on your red blood cells and takes the place of some of the oxygen in your bloodstream, inhibiting breathing.
Some of the other chemicals found in cigars, cigarettes and chewing tobacco, are THINGS THAT YOU WOULD NEVER PUT INTO YOUR MOUTH.. Some of their other more common uses are:

    * ammonia (household cleaning agent)
    * acetone (nail polish remover)
    * naphthalene (mothballs)
    * methanol (rocket fuel)
    * formaldehyde (which preserves the dead)
    * phenol (disinfectant)
    * hydrogen cyanide
    * metals (76 metals including arsenic, cadmium, nickel)
    * radioactive compounds (polonium-210 and potassium-40)
    * acetic acid (vinegar)
    * toluene (industrial solvent)
    * pesticides.

Here are some other lesser known facts about the manufacturing of your favorite brands of smokes. Additives are added to cigarettes during the manufacturing process to:
    * add more flavor, including sugar, honey, liquorice, cocoa, and chocolate liqueur to lessen the harshness of the inhaled smoke.
    * lessen the irritating effects of smoke. Menthol and eugenol numb the throat.
    * change the chemistry of nicotine. Ammonium salts and acetaldehyde (in burnt sugar) increase nicotine’s addictive potential.
    * change the chemistry of smokers’ brains to make them more receptive to nicotine.

There are a number of special problems with many of these additives:
    * Additives such as sugar and honey might seem harmless because we are used to eating them, but when additives in cigarettes are burnt, they can change into different chemicals, some of which are toxic. For example, liquorice and sugar produce cancer-causing chemicals when burnt. Also, these substances are inhaled into the lungs, which are delicate and much more vulnerable to harm than the stomach and intestines.
    * The health effects of additives on smokers are not made public by the tobacco companies, and many may not be known at all.
    * Some additives make tobacco smoke less harsh and taste better, but it also makes it easier for newcomers, such as children, to learn to smoke, and make inhaling tobacco smoke more agreeable to everyday smokers.

One of the most telling asides I experienced from quitting the smoking habit while on a road trip, was after I returned home from a 4 week tour, and 3 weeks without cigarettes.  When I walked into my closet with all of my beautiful, expensive, CLEAN, suits and shirts, the smell was grotesque. GAWD, it was a shock the smell of stale, dank smoke was overpowering. The smell never really was tolerable again and eventfully all of my wardrobe had to be discarded, and replaced. I had no idea I literally smelled no matter how often I bathed or applied even expensive men’s cologne.

My children always told me they could smell me coming into their rooms late at night after work to kiss them good night.. I thought it was the garlic from cooking, when I quit they told me otherwise.. Daddy you used to stink from cigarettes.. If my loved ones were offended, what about my customers, friends, and strangers? Yuck!

If you believe you don’t retain the smell of smoke after sneaking a quick smoke outside, you are living in La La land.. Nonsmokers can smell you a mile away no matter how much the wind was blowing..
That little cough that you may have is a precursor to many more devastating, debilitating, illnesses. And that shortness of breath is a sneaky symptom of poisoning.. Yep!

Lets talk money, if I told you that most average smokers could have more than enough money to buy a new car and have it under their tree if they just stop smoking for the next 10 years, and they may still be alive and healthy to enjoy it as well..
Last but not least, if you can stop smoking today, you will build your own self esteem to a level that you may not have achieved since you kissed your first love.. In only 20 days, it will be over, past, a nonsmoker, free, smelling like a newborn, rich as a Kennedy, handsome/beautiful, and strong as nails.. Wow all that and smart as hell, what more could you want?

WE are here to help you get through it.. Just post your intention on this thread and check in daily, or Freepmail me and I and others will keep your secret and/or hold your hand through the first humps.. GOOD LUCK, and HAPPY NEW YEAR!

My mother was of German background. Her parents were both born in Germany and her mother came to this country at the ripe old age of 14 to be a domestic for a wealthy family. That is where the sauerkraut for us came from. Mashed potatoes? Delicious anytime anyplace. Play with the ingredients as there really is no set recipe. It's just the mingling of all those wonderful flavors that make it mouth wateriing delicious. In fact, we are heading over to our daughter's house in about an hour to enjoy the dinner.

Go to Kuner on search and read about them. They began in 1883 in Colorado. :) Interesting reading. Anyway, enjoy today and the food that begins our New Year. Good health and happiness in the New Year!!!

One thing no one has mentioned about all this "traditional" fare ... it evolved over time ... especially the stuff in the South ... and it evolved in an agrarian society. That is why most of these recipes were not written down. They used what they had on hand and/or what had been plentiful that year.

Of course, these traditional foods continue to evolve ... I quickly cook my onion/celery/shallots [green onions if you are not from New Orleans]/parsley, etc. in a tablespoon or so of extra virgin olive oil instead of in a cup of bacon grease or lard.

Much pork was eaten in the South ... it was more economical to slaughter a hog/pig than to slaughter the cow that you depended upon for milk/butter. Most farms had a bunch of pigs but unless you lived on a vacherie [dairy farm] you did not necessarily have many cows.

Years when we are fortunate enough to have our Jewish friends with us, we certainly do not use pork ... but substitute one of the many delicious pure beef sausages or use pure beef bacon.

Our lifestyles have changed and our cuisine has evolved as well ... we live longer because we no longer use some of those old artery clogging ingredients.

We all alter the concept of these recipes to suit our preferences ... but continue to enjoy the traditions associated with the food and savour the memories of the people we shared these dishes with in the past.

Happy New Year, All
