Just wanted to tell you how much I'm enjoying reading this thread. I'm treating it kind of like smorgasbord, with a bit here and there. It's great...thanks. :)

I have heard of Ralph Stanley. He sure can sing, and his and the Clinch Mountain Boys rendition of "Amazing Grace" is my favorite of that hymn.

When I make the black-eyed peas, I use whatever is around that I fancy. They always come out good...

LOL!! It's cold and raining here, with another storm on the way; I may not open anything for the next 2 days.
I will have candles lit, though...

Hi snugs. Enjoy the thread. It's a good one.
I have decided on bbg (in the oven) pork ribs. Mrs Don-o is making collard greens. I will make cornbread. I could use some snow here. It is a bit warm for this time of year.

Thanks for the posts on quitting smoking. That is my husband's New Year's resolution. I'm saving this thread for him to read the success stories.
Congratulations to all of you who have kicked the habit. Prayers for all of you who are trying.
I had the good fortune of being able to quit cold-turkey years ago when I got pregnant with my first child. My daddy was able to quit almost as easily as I did...not so for my mother and sister. They went through a lot of chewing gum and tears, but finally did it after several tries. I don't think my sis would have ever quit if she hadn't become afraid for her own health after she watched a good friend die from lung cancer, and he still was not able to stop smoking even when breathing became so difficult.

Our tradition is to get a glass of whatever we fancy, some shortbread and toast the new year in watching Big Ben on TV, then after midnight have cheese and biscuits (crackers)
