Wow! Congratulations! I'll give it a try.
To be truthful, I cannot think of anything I have thrown/given away that has come back to bite me.
OTOH, perhaps I have so much stuff that I have not reached that level yet. My husband is a finish carpenter and a pack rat from you know where. Every time he finds something we need for a fix in what should be our garage but is his shop/storeroom of treasures he proudly reminds me of how wise it was of him not to have thrown that item away.
I don't make the kraut from scratch - I buy it, but I never use canned. Claussen or Hebrew National are my favorites. I rinse the brine off before I use it. I saute chopped bacon with caraway seed and add the rinsed and drained kraut to it (don't drain the bacon grease). Then I add a couple of teaspoons of paprika and a little water. I like to put Kielbasa on top of it, cover the pan and let it all simmer for about 30 minutes. It's delish!
I admire you two for quitting "cold turkey". I screamed at everyone when I did it that way. No..it wasn't my cup of tea, LOL.

I think you forgot about buying tanks and heavy artillary...
Thanks for the ping Carlo!!!
Got up at 5, went to WallyWorld & the grocery store - I love shopping at that time, no one there but a few shady liberals...
Happy New Year everyone! Best wishes for a successful, healthy New Year for all, God bless and protect our President, our Pope and our Troops.
Place your chinese food orders early! LOL!
I don't make resolutions, but plan to keep the following in mind in 2006 (after a difficult 2005):
"We cannot tell what may happen to us in the strange medley of life. But we can decide what happens in us - how we can take it, what we do with it - and that is what really counts in the end. How to take the raw stuff of life and make it a thing of worth and beauty - that is the test of living. Life is an adventure of faith if we are to be victors over it, not victims of it." (Anonymous author)
For 2006, I wish for all of you peace, health and the happiness of a life of worth and beauty.

Haven't tried that one, but then again I am usually trying to pair my hors' with a bottle of wine. I let me wife make anything that is related to the main course. I try to think of my appetizers, etc. and a bottle of wine as a meal unto themselves. :o)
Got some King Crab Legs this morning to go with my freshly caught Sunfish & Walleyes tonight. Caught 'em through the ice.
Good mornin'!
5 am never sees me unless I am having breakfast after last call.......
which is very often these days...lol- getting a little old for that!
I cannot let my husband read your post or you will have an univited guest for dinner! Fresh Walleye is his favorite.
LOL! I haven't made this cake in years since I gave up the booze but boy it is a great cake. Back in the day it was a cup for the cake and a cup for the cook.
I got the recipe from a Bacardis ad in a magazine and named it Maryland State Police Sobriety Check Point Cake, i.e. dont eat and drive!
Most of the alcohol cooks out of the cake mix but the glaze is the killer.
I use the usual large can of sauerkraut (why sweat out making from scratch, hmmmm?). Don't use the Bavarian or other krauts that already have various flavorings in them.
I always keep a small slice of pork cut from the end of a roast, or a single small pork chop in the freezer. Defrost the piece, brown slowly in its own fat (or use a little butter). It doesn't have to be cooked through, just browned (make sure it isn't singed or burny). Set aside on a piece of paper towel.
Push kraut down in can, pouring all the liquid into a measuring cup. Set liquid aside. Put the kraut into a pot (about the size you boil your dinner potatoes in).
In a small frying pan, gently simmer about a eighth of a large white onion diced in a couple tablespoons or three of butter till clear.
Now, in a cup, mix two or three tablespoons of flour and some water like you're making a white sauce or gravy. Start the heat low under the frying pan. Add the flour mix slowly, stirring. Immediately add some of the kraut juice you set aside. Start that stirrin'. Keep stirrin' till you've used all the kraut juice and you have a nice, lumpless, medium-thickened roux.
Pour the roux over the kraut in the pot. I then add a wee pinch of sugar. Also a couple shakes of pepper.....no salt, please. The kraut is full of salt.
Then I add a generous sprinkling of caraway seeds.....and then I toss in the poke chop which I had scissored into small pieces when it was cool. Stir.
Bring pot to a boil, turn down to a low simmer. Don't cover. Watch....and stir once in a while. Add water if necessary. Simmer (low) for about two to two-and-a-half hours.
I make this the day before so that it blends nicely overnight. Keep tightly covered in fridge. Before dinner, spoon kraut into uncovered pretty pyrex serving bowl, heat in oven (325 or 350) till slightly browned on top (45 minutes or so depending on oven setting).
This is kraut that's mild but still has a tasty kick. Even folks who don't like sauerkraut like my sauerkraut!
Roast pork, browned potatoes, sauerkraut, crispy bakery rye rolls, applesauce, homemade lemon meringue pie......a dinner to start the New Year right!

I am in a quandary. I wanted to quit working out today so I could resolve to start working out next year. I wanted to drink to excess today so I could resolve to cut back next year.
There is a problem. Workouts are addictive. I held out until 10AM, then had to do a little limited to one minute sets. I decided to start drinking at the same time, but to limit it to one shot and a beer every hour.
Now can I still get away with the traditional resolutions? Ah heck everyone cheats on their New Years Resolutions anyway, why should I be any different.
Sounds like you just started a little sooner than most. LOL
Im a realist?
