Guatemala calls "insult to Latin America" proposed U.S. wall

Guatemala City, Dec 29 (EFE).- Guatemalan Vice President Eduardo Stein on Thursday described as "an insult to Latin America" the U.S. proposal to build a wall along its border with Mexico.

"We take it as a total insult to all Latin America that a government calling itself a friend and partner in the region only wants our money and our goods, but sees our people as if they were an epidemic. They treat us as if we were a sub-hemisphere of criminals," Stein told reporters.

The vice president was talking about United States plans to build an wall along its border with Mexico to halt the thousands of immigrants that every day try to enter the country illegally. The U.S. House of Representatives approved the bill two weeks ago.

To reporters' questions about whether U.S. migration policy could "chill" diplomatic ties between Guatemala and the United States, Stein answered that "there will be a need to reconsider" relations.

"Not just by building walls and passing tough laws that criminalize the search for better economic opportunities" can migration problems be solved, he said. The U.S. proposal is not only "absolutely intolerable and inhuman, (but) it forces us to consider other choices in terms of international alliances," Stein said.

Yep. But links to Germany go way back and probably no one now views Nazis with anything like happiness. The various states of South America run a wide range of constitutions, and they will continue to experiment until they get it right, if they ever do.

"Guatemala has some good mines..lots of jade, etc."

And Mexico has some great tourist spots and a lot of oil. It's still a third world sewer presided over by a corrupt government.

El Jeffe Vicente is also insulted. Good.

No, don't feel free. The merits of the wall or lack thereof aside, we don't want Central America to slip into the clutches of Chavez and Castro. We've already seen what that can do.

No, what can that do?

What is worse however, is to allow ourselves to be held hostage & blackmailed by some banana republics (Mexico, Guatamala, Venezuala, now Bolivia as well) for wanting to defend our own borders. A good puff of wind from us would send these "bandelero" armies run screaming for the hills. The bottom line is.... we need to develop our own oil & energy independence (yes we can with oil resources in ANWR, nuclear power, solar & wind turbines, etc) so we won't need to have one ounce of dependence on Mexican or Venezualan oil, and then tell these countries to go take a hike.

Right now much of Latin America and South America is lurching to left, and the worst thing the U.S. can do is to try and buy or be blackmailed for the dubious "loyalty" of these two-bit dictators. Let 'em go. If they do anything to harm or kidnap our citizens or interests, then blast the offenders incredibly hard once or twice as a warning that we will not give into their blackmail. I think if the U.S. would do this and stand firm, we would see these countries falling over themselves to get back on good relations with the U.S.

Congrats...best line on this whole thread.

Exactly. They are criminals. So, this VP advocates breaking the laws of other countries. How long before his peeples decide to start breaking the laws of his country?

Or better yet, open up your borders to anyone with no checks and we might reconsider!

We should send a message back saying, "We welcome any of you to come into our country. You just need to knock and wait for us to open the door like good neighbors. Just because we live on the same side of the world doesn't mean you can just run in and out of our home whenever you please."

There were 2 articles, about a week ago here on FR. One mentioned the many visa overstays of Guatemalans that we gave by the thousands for victims of an earthquake/flood. The other mentioned that MS-13 formed in that country and now it is a death sentence for anyone who is affiliated with a gang, so they all came here.

These tin horn, 3rd world types like the VP in the article should be screaming, "USA, you don't have to build a fence (it is NOT a wall!) we'll keep our criminals from now on".

Corrupt SOB's. All of 'em.

And we should care about this, why?

We have an enormous security problem at our southern border.
BUILD THE WALL!!!!!

Pass legislation the imposes large fines and significant jail time on employers that hire Criminal Aliens. US Chamber of Commerce be damned!

Provide disincentive for them to invade us and a good reason (no jobs) for those already here to leave.

It's our country, damnit. We can defend it any way we see fit.

There is another organism on this planet that follows the same pattern. A virus. Illegal immigrants are a disease, a cancer of this planet, you are a plague, and we are the cure.

You couldn't be more wrong. If you think that letting Central America slip back to where it was before Ronald Reagan turned the tide against communism, dictatorships, and everything else that was wrong it the region is okay, then I don't know what to think of you.

Every country in Central America is now a democracy, and if that means some dumb politician can't badmouth us without us urging them back to communist totalitarianism, then you have a very low threshold for criticism.

Give me a break.

This is OUR COUNTRY, and we will build a BIG wall wherever we want!!!
