Did you see the one pundit? The only talking points out are: this is a distraction. This is a distraction for the President, for Republicans 2006 elections. And why did they announce it on a Friday before a holiday weekend. That guy seriously looked idiotic.

They're worried......they know this is big!

Do you think Patrick Henry would have had any problem with the interception of British mail or dispaches during the Revolutionary War?

I dunno. Let's ask him. :-)

Patrick: This is part of a thread about the recent announcement on Fox News that Dept. of Justice is going after the NSA wiretap leakers...

I know you're normally on the crevo threads, but since (IIRC) you are a lawyer, I'd love to hear your take on this...

Cheers!

First of all, only a fool would believe that domestic spying is being limited to international communication. Secondly, most so-called "conservatives" here wouldn't have a problem if the NSA tapped every single phone in America.

Is there anything the government shouldn't be allowed to do in the name of "national security"?

Unless the NYT has clearance, this isn't true.

Baloney. Lack of official status does not suddenly make you immune to the law regarding classified material. I work for a defense contractor; of course, not all of our employees carry security clearances. However the gub'mint specialists who come in each year to brief our employees make it quite clear: ignorance of the law is no defense. Those without a clearance have the same obligation to protect classified data as those with one.

There was a post on here earlier last week saying that Rat Traitor Senators Rockefeller, Durbin and Wyden are under investigation.

Of course, we'll probably end up seeing little more than staffers (and maybe a few DNC operatives) used as scapegoats. I doubt this will take any big-timer down, although at least one would be nice.

Journos will only be frog marched if the fail to reveal sources. A Senator and a judge may be in some hot water.

From the MSNBC story:

“We are opening an investigation into the unauthorized disclosure of classified materials related to the NSA,” one official said, referring to the National Security Agency.

I grew up near NSA and had many, many personal contacts with NSA folks, including families.

The leaks that started in the NY Slimes are absolutely obscene, and the employees who engaged in them should be hanged.

Sen. Jay Rockefeller, D-W.Va., vice chairman of the Senate Intelligence Committee and one of the members briefed by the administration about the surveillance plan, expressed deep reservations about the program to the vice president in 2003. But he said he also would like hearings into whom leaked the story to reporters at the Times.
