Protesters decry Lipinski's vote on immigration bill

Hispanic community activists gathered Wednesday in front of the office of U.S. Rep. Daniel Lipinski (D-Ill.) on the Southwest Side to protest his vote for a bill that would impose stricter regulations on undocumented immigrants and make illegal entry into the country a criminal act.

The group of about two dozen protesters also announced the formation of the Committee for the Progress of the 3rd Congressional District, a set of business and community leaders who intend to find a candidate to run against Lipinski in 2008.

"The Mexican community is incensed by his voting in the bill," said Juan Salgado, director of the non-profit Illinois Coalition for Immigrant and Refugee Rights. "Immigration is one of the main reasons Chicago continues to be prosperous ... This is just not sensible."

House Bill 4437--introduced by Rep. F. James Sensenbrenner Jr. (R-Wis.) and titled the Border Protection, Anti-Terrorism and Illegal Immigration Control Act of 2005--would make illegal entry, formerly a civil violation, a felony. It also would make helping and transporting illegal immigrants already in the country a crime.

His father was a gun grabbing twit. Happy to see that the son has some sense.

That being said, one of the benefits of gerrymandering is that while many areas of Lipinski's district have sizeable and growing Mexican immigrant (largely illegal) populations, most of the voters remain elderly white Catholics, along with second generation Mexican Americans who are fed up with what they see.

What I really don't understand is the chutzpah that drives these beings to think that just because they entered illegally, they're doing us a favor and therefore ought to be allowed to stay. And then there's Vicente Fox and his crew also outraged that we *dare* build a fence. Help me understand (if you get it).

So true. Unfortunately, if we are the refuge for all the countries that can't take care of their people, we will dilute what we have paid dearly for. I have outgrown the "save the world" mentality. First on my list is protecting the core of this country... and we have so much work to do at home without taking in orphans from misguided nations.

As far as financing their incompetence, we have already allowed tons of jobs to go to Mexico in the spirit of "free trade," and now they are all leaving there for China. I think we do MORE than we should to give these countries a chance to make it work. I must stop before I go off on another rant about "free trade." :)

Many of us believe that what our politicians refer to as "free trade" isn't free at all, and it's not even helping the countries that it pretends to help. We're being sold out.

I hope this is not true but I imagine it is. We are often told by many here on FR that Mexicans do not vote as a block and that the majority of Mexicans are against illegal immigration.

That depends on just who makes up this particular "Mexican community" the quoted sentence is referring to. If they're mainly illegal aliens, then they can't legally vote, so it doesn't matter what they want.

As for Mexican-Americans, I believe they mainly vote for Democrats, however I don't know what percentage of Mexican-Americans are registered to vote and then follow through and show up at the polls.

I will try to explain it to you.
First off I am of Mexican desent. Secondly, I spent 1 yr in Mexico as a missionary, I got to be around the Nationals and learn some of the culture. It is all about their culture. NOW you know more about what is being unleashed on the American people.
It is ok to steal, it is not wrong in their eyes it is culture HONESTLY.

When I was at the Bible School in El Carmen Mexico I was ripped off constantly.

It is because they thought I was a rich American. I had,.... They did not have, it is ok for them to take because I have more.
That is what I found to be their basic manner.

If that was the best Bible students can come up with....what do you think the rest of the culture is gonna come here and do??

I'm with you there. Later in the article, Juan refers to the "concerns of the Hispanic population in the 3rd District", a clear inference to them being a voting block. Point is, if this is true, it would indicate that this crowd will fight against any meaningful "immigration" reform, even Dem sponsored.
