A 53-year-old registered sex offender found slain in his apartment Tuesday morning suffered a single gunshot wound, authorities said.
Police identified the man as James Garrett. He is believed to have moved to the apartment sometime in July.
Police Capt. Jeff Schneider said the amount of blood at the scene made it difficult for investigators to determine immediately what caused Garrett's death.
After an autopsy Tuesday evening, Yakima County Coroner Maury Rice attributed the death to a gunshot wound, but he declined to release further details because of the active investigation.
Schneider said detectives had yet to develop a motive for the killing, the ninth in the city of Yakima this year.
Four homicides occurred in Yakima last year.
Garrett was classified a Level II sex offender, considered to be a moderate risk to re-offend.
Schneider said Garrett had notified authorities of his place of residence in the 400 block of South 18th Avenue, a requirement of state law.
The home is part of a large single-family residence that had been remodeled to a duplex.
Bob Livengood, Garrett's landlord and the owner of the home, said Tuesday night that Garrett had always been a good tenant.
"I got along with him real well. I never had any trouble at all," Livengood said.
Livengood said his discovery of the death came as a shock.
He declined to discuss further details about the case at the request of detectives.
Garrett was convicted of second-degree attempted child molestation in King County in 1998, according to offender records maintained by the Yakima County Sheriff's Office.
In 1994, he was convicted in Bridgeport, Calif., of annoying or molesting children, said Debbie Martin, the sheriff's records supervisor.
Details about those cases were not readily available Tuesday afternoon.
Martin said Garrett had first registered with the county in 1995 and listed his latest address earlier this year. His file showed that he had always registered as required, Martin said.
Schneider said the occupant of the second apartment went to check on Garrett after hearing noises and breaking glass about 7 a.m.
Schneider said the neighbor may have encountered a man possibly responsible for Garrett's death, but could give police little more than a sketchy description.
The neighbor returned later and found Garrett's body, Schneider said.
Sounds like a 'suicide.'
One less predator. GOOD.
Yippee !!!!!!!!!!!!
Did the deceased have any enemies? Hmmmm... I wonder.
Who says there's NO good news in the news anymore?
Seems like natural causes.
That thought occurred to me as well....
Simple case to solve. Go through the records, see which child's dad own's the type of gun used, tell him not to do it again, rule the a ...
FR Error...
rule it self defense...
"Investigators had yet to develop a cause of death or a motive." [paraphrased]
Is this a joke? A registered sex offender is found with a bullet and they can't figure it out???
Reminds me of SFPD (with lowest murder close rate in the country).
If ever there was a no-brainer...
Thank God! That means there's no reason to remove him from the voter rolls.
I am generally opposed to Govt. lists, i.e. gun reg. etc., however in this case it sure do make it easy on the coroner....
hoo hoo, that's what I'm talkin' about... "considered to be a moderate risk to re-offend..." not anymore, babeee...
Lead poisoning.
Inhaled some airborne lead particles - large ones...
Lead poisioning is an occupational hazard.
Kersey is at it again!
The police officer writing the report , finished writing it up and placed on the bottom of the Cold case stack.
I'm not familiar with police work, but might it be the case that "motive" might need to be some a little more precise, in that they could use it to narrow the scope of suspects? "Being a registered sex offender" is not motive enough to narrow the suspect population (starting with "just about everybody") very much...
