Cold weather that passed through Arizona prompted the spike, health officials say. They also say visitors seeking refuge from snow country or staying with family may have brought in viruses.

Cases of strep throat, croup, common colds and bronchitis also are showing up, lengthening the line of patients waiting for care.

Like influenza, strep and other respiratory illnesses are fairly common in the winter.

Actually this is totally normal for this time of year. The area goes thru it every season and it's brought on by all the snowbirds [migrating white haired retiree's that move south every winter] from Canada & Minnesota bringing their crud with them.

There is also a nasty tracheo-laryngitius bouncing around the Chandler family (cough). With the high volume of dust and molds in the valley air, my asthma is kicking up, too (cough cough). Mrs. Chandler wanted me to go to urgent care Christmas Eve, but I knew I literaaly would not survive sitting in the waiting room for 12 hours (wheeze).

I'm much better now, but Mrs. Chandler is having a relapse. Daughter Elizabeth and grandson Joey are having a second round, too.

A flu outbreak is making its way around and hospitals say their emergency waiting rooms are packed.

Emergency room for the flu?

I don't get why there's so much hype going on about the flu. It goes around every year.

I've had the flu. About 20 years ago. I've never been so sick in my life. I fought it for almost 10 days and still felt weak and tired for over a month after. Last year I came down with it again and took Tamiflu. Miracle of miracle drugs. I felt like myself in less than 3 days.

Don't know if the article mentioned it, but many players on the Arizona State football team came down with the flu there prior to their Bowl game last night.

It's been in this household for a week and half.

And we aren't dead yet.

Down in Yuma this Flu has been running rampant. It's hitting most everyone. I came down with it almost 3 weeks ago and I am still weak and coughing.

Starts with headaches, sneezing, runny nose, sore throat, then rapidly changes into Bronchial problems, muscle aches and weakness.

This strain missed this years Flu shots mix.

I am hoping I will finally be finished with it this week. It is taking turns going thru every member of the family.

I took antibiotics for 10 days and that reduced it's impact some, and used Zicam for the runny nose...helped right away with the cold like symptoms. Still I don't know what to do about the weakness. Maybe a few shots of Ceurvo Gold will help?

At least I won't care if I'm feeling weak and might get some much needed sleep!

Last week my family ended up with this 24 hour flu. Found out it hit a lot of people at church too. This week we found out the kids have chicken pox. Still have no idea where they were exposed to it.

And people are dying because of it! Heard a story of a traffic accident critical patient being turned away by every hospital in Maricopa County until a City's fire chief was paged Christmas Night and he raised holy heck!

You see, even if you have auto insurance, full medical insurance, have played by the rules, you can still die because some illegal has taken a bed in the closest trauma center (and getting that care for $1 too!)

Here's a news flash. Don't go to the ER. It's the flu and there isn't anything we can do for you. Nothing. Drink lots of fluids, take tylenol or advil for your temp and muscle aches and STAY HOME AND DON'T PASS IT ON.
