Philadelphia School District Lawyer Calls Jurors 'Crackers' Attorney Removed As Lead Councel After Racist Comments

PHILADELPHIA -- Attorney Carl Singley has lost his role as lead counsel in a school district discrimination case after allegations that he called several white jurors "crackers" after their verdict.
The jury had awarded about $3 million in damages to four white plaintiffs who contended that their boss in the Philadelphia School District's purchasing department had fired them in 2003 for racial reasons.
Singley, who is black, was accused of making the comment to jurors in a courthouse elevator after last week's verdict. He soon found himself back in the courtroom before U.S. District Judge Harvey Bartle III.

Cracker refers to the whip cracker. The man who whipped the slaves.
The guy is obviously an idiot, but why was he in front of a judge after the comment? He has the right to say whatever he wants.

Interestingly enough, the Negro League baseball team in Atlanta was called the Atlanta Black Crackers.
There's still a Negro League? We should have a white athlete try out and then sue for discrimination when he doesn't make the team.
He wasn't diciplined, he was taken off this appeal as the lead. His firm still has the School Board contract. Even though the Mayor doesn't run the Board this still fits in with his racial comments from last year when he said WE are in charge.
A lawyer is officially an "officer of the court." I suppose that makes his treatment of jurors the judge's business. Reckon what the judge woulda said to a white lawyer who'd used the N word with some black jurors!

Cracker, Southern U.S. derogatory term for "poor, white trash" (1766), is from c.1450 crack "to boast" (e.g. not what it's cracked up to be), originally a Scottish word. Especially of Georgians by 1808, though often extended to residents of northern Florida.
"I should explain to your Lordship what is meant by crackers; a name they have got from being great boasters; they are a lawless set of rascalls on the frontiers of Virginia, Maryland, the Carolinas and Georgia, who often change their places of abode." [1766, G. Cochrane]

Grady McWhiney, in "Cracker Culture: Celtic Ways in the Old South," (The University of Alabama Press, 1988) makes a distinction concerning the term CRACKER and tries to reclaim the term that is now used as a slur. He says that "cracker," in Scotch-Irish dialect meant "a person who talked boastingly." Later the term Crackers came to mean a Scotch-Irishmen, a particular group of people. McWhiney says Cracker eventually became a disparaging term and Crackers were equated with "poor whites."
He quotes historian Lewis C. Gray, in "History of Agriculture in the Southern United States to 1860," as associating the term Cracker with other slurs: "The distinctive characteristics of poor whites were recognized in the various special appellations by which they were contemptuously known in different parts of the South, such as, 'piney-woods people,' 'dirt-eaters,' 'clay-eaters,' 'tallow-faced gentry,' 'sand-hillers,' and 'crackers.'"
McWhiney asserts that Crackers are a distinctive ethnic group - the Scotch-Irish - and is appalled that, ".in a nation in which slurs based upon race, ethnicity, or religion have become strictly taboo, it is still acceptable to lampoon Crackers as a group."
HAHAH ... he fired some white peeps in 2003 for racial reasons... then when the verdict awards to the plantiffs 3mil, he has an outburst calling the jurors crackers .. uhm sorry bub, but you just lost any and all chances of getting any appeals in this case... now cough up the 3 mil in bones..
