MISSION U.S. Sen. John Cornyn said Tuesday that building a fence along the southwest border is unrealistic and ultimately would not deter illegal immigration into the United States.
Cornyn, R-Texas, was in Mission on Tuesday to discuss flood control and the Rio Grande Valley levee system, but spoke briefly with the media about immigration issues and his plan to allow workers into the country legally but temporarily. He said he would not support a bill calling for a security fence which could start in California and end in Brownsville although the U.S. House of Representatives approved the measure last week. The Senate will discuss the measure when they reconvene next year, and Cornyn said immigration would be a pertinent issue.
He expects a compromise between the Senate and the House on immigration bills.
"(The wall) is a 19th century solution to a 21st century problem," Cornyn said, calling for a more comprehensive immigration plan. Millions of immigrants, both documented and undocumented, cross daily through the southwest border and Cornyn said his bill permits workers to enter for a set time period, calls for increased enforcement at the border and more investigations into employers that hire illegal immigrants.
Hidalgo Mayor John David Franz said he would oppose any wall cutting through his border city.
"I think we need to be looking at amicable solutions," he said. "(A wall) would put us back 100 years. A wall isnt going to solve anything."
"Obviously we disagree."
What is it about the more liberal senate bill you find better than what the house of representatives passed?
"A fence, unless electrified, will not deter the coyotes bringing illegals in"
Exactly. I think everybody needs to read this article:

Do you want a bill sponsored by McCain/Kennedy or Cornyn/ Kyl?
Also do you oppose the fence and enforcement? That is what your post sounds like you want; another failed 1986 amnesty.
I just checked some of your other posts on this thread...Are you confused?
Or did you simply misunderstand my comment?
Or do you just want the house bill without a fence and enforcement?
"Do you want a bill sponsored by McCain/Kennedy or Cornyn/ Kyl?"
How about none of the above? Can't we have what the house wants without some failed 1986 amnesty? It didn't work for Christ's sake.
How about neither? The House passed a good bill, let's go with that and talk about any possible guest worker plans after the border's secured. Otherwise it'll turn into 1986 all over again, just another bait and switch where it becomes all amnesty and no enforcement.
Send him the message. Most people don't bother so these guys think they can just blabber their way through their term. The border is the biggest problem facing us. Parts of Texas are already Mexico!!

Amnesty will be just like creating a "Republicans for Hillary" support group.
What century are terrorists on foot, John?!
"Or do you just want the house bill without a fence and enforcement?"
Okay, I think it's you that is confused. How can I want the house bill without a fence and enforcement? It contains them! I said I would want a bill with those to fail if the bill contains an amnesty. I also said the bill is good without them, but I would rather have them in there.
You said you believe the what the senate and white house want is the best. What the senate and white house want is a guest worker amnesty with no fence and no real enforcement.
You are (deliberately?) misreading my comment.
Try again, with an apology.
Your commentws to me make no sense.
Otherwise I will have to believe that you are (a relative newby) a troll?
Thanks for the spin, but I'll take a 30' high fence, thank you. There is no issue more important in Texas than our invasion from the south by both mexicans, and OTMs.
Well you see if we make those terrorists guest workers they'll suddenly realize the error of their ways and appreciate being a lettuce picker living in the promised land </major sarcasm>
He does not go up for reelection until 2008. Were stuck with him for awhile longer.
"You are (deliberately?) misreading my comment."
Just tell me how.
While I like the idea, it also takes something else rather important... Water. This is something in short supply in many areas of the border these days because mexico has been siphoning off so much of the Rio Grande in direct contravention of several treaties we have with them. Of cours, since mexico is a criminal enterprise, we don't really expect them to keep to the terms of treaties.
Kindly READ MY POST # 30!!!
I said NO BILL would be better than what the SENATE and the WH wants!!!
If the Senate gets THEIR way, we are better off with no bill.
I WANT THE HOUSE BILL for STARTERS.
If you CANNOT GET that STRAIGHT, this conversation is OVER.
