20 Iraq detainees killed in attempted breakout

Twenty Iraqi detainees and a warder were killed Wednesday in a failed breakout from a Baghdad prison, an interior ministry official said.

Prisoners stole a weapon from a guard at an Iraqi detention facility in the northern Shiite pilgrimage district of Kadhamiyah, before shooting dead one prison officer and wounding another.

Guards then opened fire on the detainees, killing 20, the official told AFP.

Many of those detained at the facility are held on terrorism charges.

A US military official said the incident was under investigation.

BAGHDAD, Dec 28 (Reuters) - Iraqi police shot dead several prisoners in a shootout on Wednesday at a Baghdad military base after one prisoner grabbed a weapon from one of his guards, Interior Ministry officials said.

There was confusion over casualty figures. A police source and an Interior Ministry official said more than 20 prisoners were killed but another ministry official insisted there were only 15 casualties, some of them only wounded, and that these included one dead police guard and one wounded officer.

Killed while trying to "escape" creates less paperwork than a trial.

Maybe we should let some of our most violent criminals in this country, including death row inmates, "escape".

I had the same thoughts.

BAGHDAD, Iraq (AP) -- An inmate in a Baghdad prison grabbed an assault rifle from a guard and opened fire on other guards and prisoners Wednesday, killing at least eight people and wounding three, police said.

The prisoner fired indiscriminately after grabbing the AK-47, killing four guards and four inmates, said Iraqi army Brig. Gen. Jalil al-Mehamadawi. The wounded were all inmates, he said.

Guards then overtook the gunman and restrained him, he said.

The prison was a Justice Ministry facility that also housed foreigners, officials said. The U.S. military had no immediate comment.

Police 1st Lt. Thair Mahmoud said police were investigating the incident, which took place in the northern Baghdad suburb of Kazimiyah.

Many of those detained at the facility are held on terrorism charges.

Hopefully, that might mean a few less IED's that our brave soldiers might have to encounter.

"Guards then opened fire on the detainees, killing 20, the official told AFP."

I mourn the death of the one guard....but celebrate the happy ending.....

20 killed? That should open about three jail cells for more to escape from later......

Damned shame.

I just caught this at Debka.com.

They say that 5 guards were shot dead first...then the prisoner killed 4 other prisoners...possibly those who had been cooperating.

So this isn't good news.

Yes, I agree that more "escape" attempts should happen today even. We need to have a whole rash of "escape" attempts.

Twenty dead and no wounded, yes. Five or six dead and the rest wounded, plus a guard dead, looks more like a real escape attempt. I think we need to wait on this one.
