WASHINGTON - Four years after the U.S. invaded Afghanistan, Taliban and al Qaeda fighters are showing renewed strength, using suicide bombs and rocket-propelled grenades. They are even training the next generation.
Since June 2005, 54 Americans have been killed in Afghanistan, by far the most lethal period since the U.S. invaded.
Behind some of the most deadly attacks is one man, a 35-year-old Afghan who calls himself Commander Ismail.
In his first interviews with Western media, Ismail brags about killing three Navy Seals this summer, then downing a Chinook helicopter that came to rescue them, killing another 16 Americans.
Commander Ismail says ousted Taliban leader Mullah Omar is alive and well and that the Mujahaddin are fighting under his command and control.
NBC News interviewed Ismail in August and again this month.
Ismail boasts that in June, he deliberately laid a trap for American forces.
Ismail: We certainly know that when the American army comes under pressure and they get hit, they will try to help their friends. It is the law of the battlefield.
A tape obtained by NBC News showed what appears to be some of the battle, and the terrorists unsuccessful attempt to coax a Navy Seal to surrender. When the U.S. military sent in a rescue team, Ismails men were waiting with a rocket-propelled grenade, downing the helicopter, and then spreading out recovered weapons and hi-tech equipment. Later, they displayed captured communications equipment and weapons.

what an $#@hole.
(Denny Crane: "I Don't Want To Socialize With A Pinko Liberal Democrat Commie. Say What You Like About Republicans. We Stick To Our Convictions. Even When We Know We're Dead Wrong.")
NBC is interviewing leaders of the Taliban more frequently than they interview President Bush.
Figures.
Things are going to spiral downward quickly over the next few years in the US.
Commander Ismail AKA Howard Dean
At least there's that.
Riiiight...
Balony.
And I agree with that.
Why does NBC want to give this man "hero" status among his "peeps"?>>
It says they haved interviewed him twice...even though he has bragged about killing Marines ...
If they could find him both of those times..why didn't they tell the Marines..so they could let him know how they feel about him..up close and personal??
The media are displaying more and more traitorous actions, IMHO>
The reporter should spend the rest of his life in prison if he isn't executed for treason!
I know the answer. It lies somewhere between treason and cowardice.
Hope Steven Spielberg has not missed this interview. . .because surely, he will want to send his prayer message to the Taliban. . .'Hollywood style'. . .
They only leak if it hurts Bush.
You see it makes perfect sense. NBC's parent company makes the engines of the helicopters that got shot down.
More shootdowns, more engines sold. It's just business.
GE we bring good things to life. My Arse.

Did I miss anything?
Congressman Billybob
I'm going to suggest to mgmt. that your new FR handle be changed to Mr. Sunshine
Did you watch the interview? An NBC producer risked his life to get this interview. This is valuable to the American public, and NBC claims they turned over information from the interview to US intelligence. I'm no fan of NBC news, but I think this is worthwhile. Certainly a better use of time than covering ridiculous calls for impeachment based on legal wiretaps.
Bring me the head of Lisa Meyers on a pike, her film crew, her editors and anyone else involved in this @#$%@#$%@#%^ story.
Won't do a single goldarned postive piece about our boys but will go and do a puff peice on this offspring of a demented camel.
Support the troops my a$$. And no I'm not questioning the patriotism of that inbred hermaphrodite. She aint got a single lick of it.
If this nation refuses to hold such flagrant and public traitors to account via its laws and courts I have only one conclusion to reach. We're going to loose until we rectify that problem.
