(Vanity) FreeRepublic Folding@Home Project Update (We're in the Top 1,200!)

OK, new thread for the next week.

First, a big shout out to the SETI members who have added CPUs to the effort. Remember, its Team 36120, NOT Team 0.

Next, congrats to all for bumping our team up to 104 processors and 76 users. We have a number of new users in the team, with Clara Lou, fzx12345, SamfromLivingston, brityank, manwiththehands and Tami all popping onto the hit list this week.

Malsua, uriah and Ken in Texas are solidly in the top 10. Malsua is continuing to add systems and now accounts for 10% of the FR total. Great job!

Free Republic Folding@Home Stats Page

On the global front, Free Republic Folders is now listed at # 1196. We are poised to overtake (today):

carletonu (maybe in MN?)
Helms-Deep
2*ian
Dynadues
Soluchis
Greece and soon the
University of Pennsylvania!

We were passed by one team, SISD. My guess is that this team really is the computers of an Independent School District that were all "volunteered" to fold over the holidays. They are producing points at a rate of 37,000 points per day. As we gain members from the 100,000 FReepers that visit JimRob's place I expect that we will have a much greater long term growth than them.

If you install the console version as a service, instead of selecting automatic during the initial setup, select manual.

When you leave for the day, go to services ( you can put a shortcut on your desktop if you want ), and start it. It'll then run while you're logged off. When you come back, you stop it.

The GUI version won't run while no-one is logged on... so that isn't really what you want.

But I think, that as long as you don't setup the optional advanced features, it won't interfere with your databases at all. The client is very good, about releasing cpu resources, and won't interfere with all but a very few limited number of programs.

I do too... it's nice to know, that if you've been crunching away for several days, what it is that you're crunching...

there's another one out there, called emii (electron microscope v2), that's supposed to allow you to monitor other machines on your network, but I haven't had a chance to play with it and make it work right yet.

The FAHmon works pretty slick, without a whole lot of configuration.

I gave them our team number. hehe

Hey... I'm just a newcomer to this team, like you, but I think the general consensus is, the more, the merrier.... :)

Wow, sounds great... I really passed up the gravy train. LOL. In any case, out of curiousity, what'll happen to your WUs after break? Any way you can write a script to have it run after-hours only?

Sorry to bother you again, Klutz...

The NVidia site says that, in order to install the new driver, I have to delete the old one.

Will this mean I can't rollback the driver if something goes wrong? (Remember, I'm on my machine 12 hrs a day for work....)

Or will it be okay if I just create a restore point before deleting the driver?

LOL! Enquiring minds want to know!

I'll have to dial back on the servers, but to make up for it, I'll have about 3500 workstation candidates that I can load the client on... (as time permits....working after hours, remote, I can probably add about 12-15 a night). The lab computers, we let run Mon-Fri, and don't turn them off, to collect updates, and then district wide, every computer is left on, Wednesday nights to get updates... so I think I can safely assume that my production will remain... "satisfactory" :)

It's always safest to create a restore point. Then try the driver, and if it blows up, the worst situation that you have, is trying to download another, using 16 color resolution, at 640x480... *ugh*...or restoring back to your restore point.. but Nvidia is pretty good about putting out adequately tested software drivers, so as long as there isn't something seriously corrupt in your machine, you should be ok... **(insert serious disclaimer here...and cross fingers :) )**

Sorry I missed your reply... I had already 'retired' for the evening. I think KlutzD is pretty much on target with his advice on this.

I've got it... spread a rumor that the DU is out to embarass us in the distributed computing competition... that'll get a few hundred of them signing up...

actually, they are trying to challenge us, they're up to 20 CPUs
