Why don't they offer him $10 million and be done with it?

Probably because he doesn't have $72,000 in siezable assets in the first place.

But I'm with you why offer him a buyout why not just kick his a$$ to the curb.

Since when did that stop the courts from desiring that somebody has to pay a fine?

In civil matters, such as this one, the plantiffs usually decide whether or not to seek damages and the ability to collect a judgement goes a long way toward deciding whether to seek one in the first place.

I suspect they said enough to have slandered him if they can't prove it... and they aren't sure they can prove it. So they're trying to buy him off.

If they will agree to give me $36,000, I will agree to not apply for a job there.

The City Council this week approved a settlement that would pay Green $72,000 in back pay and sick and annual time. The 20-year veteran of the force then would be able to use $41,000 of the settlement to buy 36 months of service credits and retire Jan. 1.

Attorney Norbert Leonard, who is representing Green for the Flint Police Officers Association, told The Flint Journal for a story published Friday that no deal has been finalized.

Mayor Don Williamson declined comment on the case.

Green suffered minor injuries when gunshots hit his bullet-resistant vest. He told investigators he was shot by a man in a white Monte Carlo that he had stopped because it had no license plate.

The gun used to shoot Green later was found and turned out to be registered to Green. He said the gun was stolen from him in 2002 but couldn't explain why the shooter had it, according to the court files.

He probably has an angle on a technicality that he has a good chance to successfully sue for, and the 72 grand may be worth it for the city to pay to make it all go away.

I agree that it's a total line of crap and this guy should not only be dumped, he should be charged with something.

I'm pretty sure this would be covered under "Felonious Mopery".

If a 20-year veteran cop suddenly shoots himself and makes up a story about it, he could probably make the case for a work-stress-related mental illness of some kind that would get him disability.

At the very least, he'd be a sympathetic defendant and it would take an airtight case -- which it doesn't sound like they have -- to get a jury to vote guilty and then vote for anything more than a suspended sentence and community service. And if he's acquitted, or convicted of a minor infraction, then they have to litigate the question of his pension.

So, yeah. it's probably saving them time and money to just pay him to go away.

Is there an outside chance this cop is on the level 20 years service seems like a long time to wait to pull a scam like this, and to use his own gun seems to be beyound stupid when he must have access to all kinds of firearms from criminals. On the other hand if it is a scam they should give him a chance to do the shooting again and save the tax payers hard earned bucks.
