US monitored Muslim sites for radiation: report

U.S. officials have secretly monitored radiation levels at Muslim sites, including mosques and private homes, since September 11, 2001 as part of a top secret program searching for nuclear bombs, U.S. News and World Report said on Friday.

The news magazine said in its online edition that the far-reaching program covered more than a hundred sites in the Washington, D.C., area and at least five other cities.

"In numerous cases, the monitoring required investigators to go on to the property under surveillance, although no search warrants or court orders were ever obtained, according to those with knowledge of the program," the magazine said.

The report comes a week after revelations that the Bush administration had authorized eavesdropping on people in the United States. U.S. President George W. Bush has defended that covert program and vowed to continue the practice, saying it was vital to protect the country.

Senior U.S. officials, including FBI Director Robert Mueller, have repeatedly said Islamic militants appeared intent on acquiring weapons of mass destruction for an attack against the United States.

Mueller said in February he was "very concerned with the growing body of sensitive reporting that continues to show al Qaeda's clear intention to obtain and ultimately use some form of chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear or high-energy explosives material in its attacks against America."

An FBI spokesman declined to confirm or deny the U.S. News and World Report article and said, "We can't talk about a classified program."

Let the lefties rant. The more they whine and posture over issues that are quite obviously in the countries best interest; the more they will be exposed as the traitors they are. The left is isolating itself from the American people. So long as the right side of the isle keeps their foot out of thier mouths; the left rant will turn into a feable whimper.

It is chilling to see our top-secret secrets spilled in public like fish guts on the cleaning table.

Why would anyone think it wise to alert potential terrorists that we are keeping an eye on them. This will simply make it easier for them to avoid our prying eyes, and that puts everyone at extreme danger.

We need some prosecutions on some of these leaks, but quick!

The Supreme Court ruled that using infrared scanners to look for evidence of crimes without a warrant was unconstitutional. Scalia wrote the majority opinion..

"We think that obtaining by sense-enhancing technology any information regarding the interior of the home that could not otherwise have been obtained without physical "intrusion into a constitutionally protected area",(Silverman, 365 U.S., at 512), constitutes a search-at least where (as here) the technology in question is not in general public use."

I want to know WHO IS THE LEAKER

Leakers would be more accurate. From the original US News Article:

Two individuals, who declined to be named because the program is highly classified, spoke to U.S. News because of their concerns about the legality of the program. At its peak, they say, the effort involved three vehicles in Washington, D.C., monitoring 120 sites per day, nearly all of them Muslim targets drawn up by the FBI.

--Snip--

One source close to the program said that participants "were tasked on a daily and nightly basis," and that FBI and Energy Department officials held regular meetings to update the monitoring list. "The targets were almost all U.S. citizens," says the source. "A lot of us thought it was questionable, but people who complained nearly lost their jobs. We were told it was perfectly legal."

--Snip--

Among those said to be briefed on the monitoring program were Vice President Richard Cheney; Michael Brown, then-director of the Federal Emergency Management Administration; and Richard Clarke, then a top counterterrorism official at the National Security Council.

--Snip--

"There were a lot of false positives, and one or two were alarming," says one source. "But in the end we found nothing."

The article makes it SOUND like the leaker worked on the NEST project. But notice who is missing from the list of persons briefed about it - Senate and House Intelligence Committees.

Until the american people understand that we are in a war for our existance; I do not think that prosicutions would be tolerated. Right now it is not really understood that a state of war exists. In war people die inocent and solders alike and I do not think americans want to accept this. There does not seem to be a willingness to do what needs to be done. Not yet anyways.

sounds like the patriot act needs updating then - clearly they cannot obtain "geiger counter warrants" to conduct this activity across the nation - the only way to be proactive about it, is to detect the device in advance.

I don't think they are FULL of them.

I work in one and I used to work closely with another.

It's probably one or two individuals. I kinda doubt it's an entire agency.

Oh, now I'm going to rush out and buy a copy of U.S. News & World Report! If they have this sort of news, it's worth buying a copy! /s

What does this kind of irresponsible journalism buy them? It's not even sensationalist, it's just plain irresponsible and perhaps even illegal.
