US monitored Muslim sites for radiation: report
5 minutes ago
U.S. officials have secretly monitored radiation levels at Muslim sites, including mosques and private homes, since September 11, 2001 as part of a top secret program searching for nuclear bombs, U.S. News and World Report said on Friday.
The news magazine said in its online edition that the far-reaching program covered more than a hundred sites in the Washington, D.C., area and at least five other cities.
"In numerous cases, the monitoring required investigators to go on to the property under surveillance, although no search warrants or court orders were ever obtained, according to those with knowledge of the program," the magazine said.
The report comes a week after revelations that the Bush administration had authorized eavesdropping on people in the United States. U.S. President George W. Bush has defended that covert program and vowed to continue the practice, saying it was vital to protect the country.
Senior U.S. officials, including FBI Director Robert Mueller, have repeatedly said Islamic militants appeared intent on acquiring weapons of mass destruction for an attack against the United States.
Mueller said in February he was "very concerned with the growing body of sensitive reporting that continues to show al Qaeda's clear intention to obtain and ultimately use some form of chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear or high-energy explosives material in its attacks against America."
An FBI spokesman declined to confirm or deny the U.S. News and World Report article and said, "We can't talk about a classified program."

Someone needs to start spying on these reporters who are getting leaks on classified materials.
Bush should order the FBI to tap the phones of our friends at the washington post and new york times.
I am willing to bet that you will find a lot of leaks coming from dem staffers on the hill and clintonistas in the fbi and cia.
based on what I have been reading from some freepers on the Patriot Act threads - you will see some people agreeing that use of a gieger counter without a search warrant violates the 4th amendment.
There comes a point where the MSM does not have the right to protect it's sources confidentiality because doing so facilitates or perpetrates a threat to the public.
They've crossed over that point repeatedly in the last couple of months.
The President actually did have the Chief Editor and some other high executives from the NY Times in his office, imploring them to NOT publish the story about the wiretaps, because THAT was top secret and it impacts national security, and they did it anyway.
The day after the story was published, the AG should have brought charges against them.
Richard Clarke?
ACLU alert!
Unfortunately, it's becoming very obvious that people are practically asking the terrorists to explode a few nukes in the US, by trying to tie the Adminstration hand and foot, so they won't be able to find out and prevent attacks.
No. He's no longer in the loop.
It's Rockefeller.
Then they finish the piece by invoking the name of the "Beast" (Cheney).
But whoever disclosed the project should be taken out and summarily executed.
it is true, they can also use satellite to scan for this, and they also use radiation sensors from choppers to scan incoming cargo ships out at sea before they reach port.
"The right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated, and no Warrants shall issue, but upon probable cause, supported by Oath or affirmation, and particularly describing the place to be searched, and the persons or things to be seized."
How exactly does a Gieger counter violate the 4th amendment?
Muslim Extremists boast of trying to obtain nuclear material to bomb the US. Volumes of evidence show that they use ordinary looking Muslims and Arabs to hide terrorists networks.
A nuclear bomb would kill millions. we've already had 2000+ killed in New York.
Is it unreasonable to use non-invasive means of monitoring for radiation that would only be emanating from illegally held nuclear material?
I just hope they have somthing to detect chem and bio...
This is getting dumber by the moment. What case law prevents the bringing of any radiation detection devise anywhere.
IIRC, they could detect the radiation from 3 houses away. At least he did his work in the storage shed, rather than the basement.
I agree with you, but all I am saying is that alot of other freepers will not.
GOOD!
I am somewhat familiar with the technology. I am happy to see it being put to good use in our own country.
Excellent!
This will probably earn Bush another point or two bump in the polls.
With the help from other Dems in Congress
You can bet he told them also
I want the Senate investigated!
