US monitored Muslim sites for radiation: report
5 minutes ago
U.S. officials have secretly monitored radiation levels at Muslim sites, including mosques and private homes, since September 11, 2001 as part of a top secret program searching for nuclear bombs, U.S. News and World Report said on Friday.
The news magazine said in its online edition that the far-reaching program covered more than a hundred sites in the Washington, D.C., area and at least five other cities.
"In numerous cases, the monitoring required investigators to go on to the property under surveillance, although no search warrants or court orders were ever obtained, according to those with knowledge of the program," the magazine said.
The report comes a week after revelations that the Bush administration had authorized eavesdropping on people in the United States. U.S. President George W. Bush has defended that covert program and vowed to continue the practice, saying it was vital to protect the country.
Senior U.S. officials, including FBI Director Robert Mueller, have repeatedly said Islamic militants appeared intent on acquiring weapons of mass destruction for an attack against the United States.
Mueller said in February he was "very concerned with the growing body of sensitive reporting that continues to show al Qaeda's clear intention to obtain and ultimately use some form of chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear or high-energy explosives material in its attacks against America."
An FBI spokesman declined to confirm or deny the U.S. News and World Report article and said, "We can't talk about a classified program."

Duh, you don't necessarily need either..even in a "criminal investigation"...but it makes such good copy...
This nation can't even come together to save ourselves.
We might as well be half French!
MSM PULL YOUR HEADS OUT!!!
I suspicion the leak that needs plugging - literally is further up the food chain than media = they are only the conduit.
I suspicion the reason Bush doesn't go, hat in hand, through the "proper" channels (court/judges &/or security council on the hill is BECAUSE they leaks come from there.
We know all to well that we have many enemies to this country in the government. Some we all know - the two K's in the senate, for example, and many other sniveling lib-coms.
I can't be the only one that believes that any one of them would deep six this country if it meant gaining power and downing Bush.
Commies never have been able to take over a country peacefully -they must have chaos
Where have you been?
It's only a felony if you are a republican - and then, it doesn't have to be an actual act - just accused of one
Where on earth did I say this?
I am asserting that the leaks are coming from "The Hill" The Hill is the Senate - not the White House - and that GWB circumvents them because he knows this.
I am remembering that GWB's daddy was not only Pres. and Vise P., but before that, head of the CIA. He certainly knows about the snakes - and how they work.
I have long suspicioned that the "Western White House" was a very clever place to build and hold many working sessions with trusted leaders and foreign dignitaries - and SECURE from listening, bugging, etc. = It's way off in the williwacks - no way any bug could be installed and too far for listening devices, sneaking up on, etc. GWB learned at daddy's knee about the dark enemies of this country that walk the hallowed halls...
Why do you think these libs makes such a ruckus about GW spending time in Crawford - and try to spin it as tho' he was not working but slacking off when there more than two hours at a time. They'd like the public to complain about it and make him spend more time where they can keep track of what he's doing, who he's seeing and what's being done and said.
Your right, and my right, but not the right of enemy aliens or their agents.
Only if you think there is a reasonable expectation of privacy from someone monitoring your gamma ray emissions or sniffing for any escaped breakdown products.
Nah, just a "Dirty bomb".
Indeed. From US Code Title 18, Section 793:
U.S. Code as of: 01/06/03
Section 793. Gathering, transmitting or losing defense information

In general Geiger counters are designed to detect ionizing radiation. They detect either gamma rays and X-Rays(very short wavelength electromagnetic waves) or particles such as Alpha particles (helium nuclei) or Beta particles (electrons given off by radioactive decay. Some only do the Gamma and X-rays.
These are all much smaller than molecules. The Gamma and even X-rays are readily absorbed by air, but creating secondary ions in the process. The Beta particles too are short ranged, (Good thing since your color TV, tube type, emits lots of them, even after they started putting in special screens). Alpha particles, OTOH, will drift around, although they eventually pick up a couple of electrons (creating ions of whatever they got the electrons from) and become ordinary helium atoms.
All these kinds of radiation/particles are given off during radioactive decay processes. Thus while the GC is detecting the ionizing radiation directly, indirectly it's detecting whatever atoms are emitting it. Could be americium, as in smoke detectors, or certain isotopes of Thorium, Cobalt, Uranium or Plutonium as well as many other "heavy" elements, or even lighter stuff like Sodium or Carbon (that's part of how carbon dating works, the Carbon-12 is unstable, albeit with a pretty long half life).
And energetic particles, such as Alpha and Beta particles. The former are simply helium nuclei, the later another name for electrons. The different names are because for some time it wasn't known they were the same things.
However all of these are stopped by small amounts of air, not to mention walls, so what is indirectly being detected is the particles, atoms, that are emitting the X-rays, Gamma Rays, and the Alpha and Beta particles. Those, often the breakdown products of earlier radioactive decay, or stray particles of something like Uranium or Plutonium, among many others, are what is really being detected, and those must be floating around in the air outside the buildings.
Well if the leaker didn't have that level of clearance, how did he/she gain access to the information? There is one possibility, Congressmen, of both houses, do not require clearances, (many of them wouldn't stand a chance in hell of getting one) to see classified information. They do have to specifically ask for it though. Unless of course they pick it up in one of the required "leadership" briefings from the executive branch. Their staff requires clearances, but they don't. Of course they likely blab to their staffers, cleared or not.
You'd likely be OK from a relatively low yield device. At least for the prompt effects, the fallout could still get you though. So if something like that happens, get the FReep out of there, preferably traveling at a right angle to the prevailing wind. Of course if the wind is blowing away from your location, you might be OK as well. BTW, don't look at the blast! Even a small one is hazardous to your eyes, even at that distance.
Look her for details.
Sure, if you can manage to keep the stray atoms of your nuclear material, and it's decay byproducts, inside your building. To "sniff" inside would take a warrant, if we are talking US citizens, but outside does not.
Much more likley, IMHO. They are the Elite, and the rules don't apply to them. You see the same sort of attitude among the more senior people in most any organization, but at least they think their security rule breaking is "harmless" (writing down combinations in their own personal code for example) and don't deliberately spill their guts to the press so that the enemy can read all about it the next day, or sooner on the internet.
I'm late to this thread, and maybe someone has already posted this obvious fact:
The U.S. Government already has an agency that monitors the air over my home and church without a warrant. It's called the EPA.
And those evil bureaucrats then go around this country (again without a warrant) telling U.S citizens that they've got to stop driving their cars, or stop burning charcoal briquets in their back yard, or put a cork in their cow's rearend, and on and on and on...
If I want to sit in my back yard, eat chili, and make methane all day long is one of these fascists going to come along and bust me? (without a warrant)
Has the MSM done anything to protect my right to make methane?
Probably not. That's part of the deal he/she/they made to leak the info. They get advance warning of when it goes off, so they can be "...out of town..." at that time.
Well, the kind of environment and guts (or non PC policy) necessary to deal with a threat like this was last seen in 1838 when Missouri Governor Lilburn W. Boggs issued an Extermination Order against all Mormons in Missouri. Legalized mobbing, murder and plunder took place under that order (and before) primarily because the Mormons had the audacity to proclaim themselves against slavery, and their growing numbers made it possible any votes could swing Missouri to a free state. That, and numerous rumors and lies spread by anti-mormon clergy that the Mormons were "..going to do this...", or "...were going to do that..."
This Extermination Order was issued on the flimsiest of excuses, and today here we have numerous reliable reports that muslim mosques are being used as meeting/hiding/training places for muslim extremist terrorists, and we can't find one politician with testicles the size of Lillburn W. Boggs' mummified gonads to propose anything remotely similar for the muslims.
Where is Lillburn W. Boggs when you need him?
