US monitored Muslim sites for radiation: report

U.S. officials have secretly monitored radiation levels at Muslim sites, including mosques and private homes, since September 11, 2001 as part of a top secret program searching for nuclear bombs, U.S. News and World Report said on Friday.

The news magazine said in its online edition that the far-reaching program covered more than a hundred sites in the Washington, D.C., area and at least five other cities.

"In numerous cases, the monitoring required investigators to go on to the property under surveillance, although no search warrants or court orders were ever obtained, according to those with knowledge of the program," the magazine said.

The report comes a week after revelations that the Bush administration had authorized eavesdropping on people in the United States. U.S. President George W. Bush has defended that covert program and vowed to continue the practice, saying it was vital to protect the country.

Senior U.S. officials, including FBI Director Robert Mueller, have repeatedly said Islamic militants appeared intent on acquiring weapons of mass destruction for an attack against the United States.

Mueller said in February he was "very concerned with the growing body of sensitive reporting that continues to show al Qaeda's clear intention to obtain and ultimately use some form of chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear or high-energy explosives material in its attacks against America."

An FBI spokesman declined to confirm or deny the U.S. News and World Report article and said, "We can't talk about a classified program."

Don't be ridiculous. If it got to U.S. News, it's out. They're racing to be first, but would be scooped in 5 minutes if they didn't print it. Their source should be the one under suspicion. Get a grip, people!

Give me a break.

A concentration camp guard could have given the same rationalization as you just did. After all some other Nazi would have come along and guarded the camps.

Right?

The person who first publishes classified information is just as much to blame as the person who is the source of the classified information. I don't give a damn how many other press whores are lined up to do the same.

Note the despicable and misleading title the LA Times used for this:

"Domestic Spying on Muslims Disclosed"

http://www.latimes.com/business/la-na-spy24dec24,0,2321194.story?coll=la-home-headlines

"Federal law enforcement officials said Friday that FBI agents have secretly monitored radiation levels at Islamic mosques, businesses and homes for several years in large cities, including Los Angeles, to determine whether nuclear or chemical bombs were being assembled."

===
The MSM is doing everything to prevent us from being able to defend ourselves against terrorists, even against such catastrophic attacks, such as a nuclear attack on a US city.

They went into a place where the public was welcome and did not in anyway attempt to examine confidential documents, etc. No warrant needed!

I know. The FBI should next undertake an undercover investigation of Wal-mart and their low prices.

There's a HUGE story here that the mainstream media is missing even though they're dead center in the middle of it: the coordinated leaking of top secret information designed to damage a war-time president.

Anyone up for "going nuclear" with US News & World Report?

Another treasonous leak of likely classified information? If so, I ask, when do traitors get arrested? What do they have to do to really ruffle any DOJ feathers? This is really, REALLY starting to tick me off.

Same here. Every day, I am becoming more and more furious. Seriously, this is a NATIONAL SECURITY issue and classified info is being leaked to our enemies via the media. But some agent whose HUSBAND OUTED her is a major investigation?

"We think that obtaining by sense-enhancing technology any information regarding the interior of the home that could not otherwise have been obtained without physical "intrusion into a constitutionally protected area",(Silverman, 365 U.S., at 512), constitutes a search-at least where (as here) the technology in question is not in general public use."

I believe this means that the evidence (and all fruits from that tree) cannot be admissible in court. That's all.

FBI Official Defends Radiation Monitoring (program stopped)

http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/1546379/posts

The official said that after discussions with attorneys, some state and local authorities decided the surveillance was legal, equating it to air quality monitors set up around Washington that regularly sniff for suspicious materials.

"They weren't targeting specific people, they were just doing it by random, driving around (commercial) storage sheds and parking lots," the official said.

Asked about the program's status, the official said, "I'd understood it had been stopped or significantly rolled back" as early as eight months ago.

Sounds like a sensible idea, considering the FACT that the terrorists that we are fighting against are Muslims.

That, plus the FACT that Muslims use mosques as military bases and munitions dumps.

Add to that theFACT that Muslim leaders use mosques as recruiting offices and military command centers.

I'd be disappointed if we weren't monitoring all Muslim site for terrorist activity.

you will see some people agreeing that use of a gieger counter without a search warrant violates the 4th amendment.

Trolls and Moose-limbs, perhaps.

You see, when you have nuclear materials sufficient to trigger remote detection, you risk emanating a lot more than a "penumbra".

What part of 1st amendment deals with the right to keep and bear nukes, anyway?

Another leak????

It's way past time that this Administration cracked down hard on these leakers who are aiding the enemy!

Everyone in the FBI, CIA, NSA and State Department needs to submit to lie detector tests and sign statements swearing that they are not responsible for releasing any classified information.

This is way out of hand and must be dealt with swiftly and severely!

This is war for goodness sake! Please President Bush! Take action now, before something terrible happens!

The Euros wouldn't think twice about this monitoring. They're probably scratching their heads at why their Demo-Pals are being so nutty.

I am simply going to echo what a lot of folks have voiced in this thread. This leak crap must stop. And if the POTUS has not by phone, office visits, and letter made it perfectly clear to every Intel agency director they must find and provide the DoJ with the names to start criminal proceedings against these bastards, I will think less of him. It is not enough for us to blame the commie media. They are being given a free ride. The blam must be squarely placed on the employes of all our Intel Agencies that do the leaking.
It obviouse to many of us has reached beyond the point of just being absurd. If at my time years back I was caught discussing things about projects I worked on while at a defense contractor, I would have found myself grasping cold roll steel bars. Why has security become so frigen lax?

It seems that while President Bush was using the "Religion of Peace" references, he was taking the actions necessary to fight the war. Well, actually while many folks around here complained about the President's speeches, he was doing his job in a manner fitting with presidential decorum as opposed to the trumpeting of every move a la President B.J. Clinton.
