US monitored Muslim sites for radiation: report
5 minutes ago
U.S. officials have secretly monitored radiation levels at Muslim sites, including mosques and private homes, since September 11, 2001 as part of a top secret program searching for nuclear bombs, U.S. News and World Report said on Friday.
The news magazine said in its online edition that the far-reaching program covered more than a hundred sites in the Washington, D.C., area and at least five other cities.
"In numerous cases, the monitoring required investigators to go on to the property under surveillance, although no search warrants or court orders were ever obtained, according to those with knowledge of the program," the magazine said.
The report comes a week after revelations that the Bush administration had authorized eavesdropping on people in the United States. U.S. President George W. Bush has defended that covert program and vowed to continue the practice, saying it was vital to protect the country.
Senior U.S. officials, including FBI Director Robert Mueller, have repeatedly said Islamic militants appeared intent on acquiring weapons of mass destruction for an attack against the United States.
Mueller said in February he was "very concerned with the growing body of sensitive reporting that continues to show al Qaeda's clear intention to obtain and ultimately use some form of chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear or high-energy explosives material in its attacks against America."
An FBI spokesman declined to confirm or deny the U.S. News and World Report article and said, "We can't talk about a classified program."

Thats 3 in as many weeks: 1) "rendition" prisons; 2) wire taps on al Qaeda/US phone calls; now, 3) Geiger counters on Muslim property.
These bastards are trying to get us killed!
Is there a bumper sticker "The Democrats Can't Be Trusted With National Security" available somewhere? It's time to risk my car's welfare to get the truth out!
Or flames from a fire? Sorry, Mr. homeowner. We could see see that your house was on fire but we didn't want to violate your rights by entering to put the fire out.
On another note, a major difference between thermal imaging and geiger counter is the state has a greater purpose in protecting its citizens from nuclear exposure than it does to detect a crime.
Its time we get a Republican (if there are any left) to sponsor legislation to make it a crime to knowingly publish, distribute, reproduce or post top secret information. The mere unauthorized possession of classified information should be considered a crime.
Right now the only people subject to any restrictions regarding classified information are government employees and contractors. There is no penalty for anyone else to expose our nations most sensitive information to the entire world and directly to our enemies.
I would include a provision whereby the media could go to federal court to seek approval for the release of information that they had obtained. The court could decide if the release of the information posed a significant risk to the public as is being done now in the federal trials of terrorists. Additionally they would be required to give up their source of the classified information.
The current situation is insane. Remember when spies had to smuggle secrets out of the country on micro-film? Now they can just give it to a reporter and consider it delivered.
Just imagine if the NY-Slimes had obtained detailed information on the Manhattan Project and published it. We can no longer trust our safety to the good intentions of the MSN, they have proven to be untrustworthy.
but the presence of fire is not a crime.
I could see the federal courts essentially saying that any detection methods used to determine whether a house contains some item pertinent to a crime (a meth lab, a nuclear bomb) requires a warrant.
The Dems don't understand that the more of this kind of stuff they leak, the higher the pres's poll numbers go.
I would be pi$$ed if we weren't doing this.
Now where are they gonna gather their dirty bomb components?
If President Bush wants to continue to keep us safe he will have to monitor more dispersed sites. This will cost millions more, that could have been better spent elsewhere protecting us.
THESE TREASONOUS LEAKS ARE REALLY STARTING TO PI$$ ME OFF!!!
PLEASE, WILL SOMEONE LOCK UP THESE SCUMBAGS????
good grief bttt
I hope they are monitoring the LEAKERS of this information including the MSM!!!
Arson is a crime.
As is monitoring polluted water that comes from property.
"The news magazine said in its online edition that the far-reaching program covered more than a hundred sites in the Washington, D.C., area and at least five other cities"
I'm surprised it's such a small number.
If 90% of the World's terrorism was committed by Baptists and Baptist churches were frequently used in the major plots that the Feds would (correctly) choose to keep an eye on Baptist churches instead.
its a small number because its likely a cross referenced list - cross referenced with the list of US locations calling those foreign phone numbers the NSA intercepted.
Alas, we promote the ways of "Clinton and HalfBriight" and promote the loose lips of the media and accept the ways of the media in helping these Islamic fanatics via political directive.
What a way to win a war....
I don't beleive in the MSM belching the government line day in day out, but there must be some balance.
The problem with the media is that they think it's their job to be adversarial. In some instances it is. In many instances it is not.
The media has miserably failed it's duty to explain issues to the public. If the media was even close to center, it could easily report information in such a manner as to bolster certain 'givens' for public consumption. It has not and will not.
This is why the public is apathetic. That and the fact that the democrats with the help of the MSM, have thrown so much defication at the public, that the public is thoroughly confused at times.
Tired of infighting, they just tune out.
That's a sad state of affairs.
