Alaska braces for possible volcanic eruption

A restless volcano near Alaska's most populated region is being watched by scientist and officials, who warned on Thursday of the risk of clouds of ash and a tsunami from a possible eruption.

The intensifying rumblings in the past few weeks at Augustine Volcano, an island peak 175 miles southwest of Anchorage in Cook Inlet, have produced a series of steam explosions, releases of sulfur gas and signs that there may be an eruption similar to events in 1986 and 1976 which sent ash clouds as high as 40,000 feet, scientists said.

There has even been an increase of 1 inch at the top of the 4,134-foot (1,260-m) volcano, a sign that seismic activity is causing the summit to bulge slightly, said John Power, a seismologist with the Alaska Volcano Observatory, a joint office run by the U.S. Geological Survey and state agencies.

"All of these things are very typical of what you would expect to see in a volcano that is reawakening," Power said.

One good Mt Pinatubo size eruption like we got in 1991 and those poor dumb global warming b@st@rds will have hell to pay as the world goes into deep freeze once again.

I remember the '76 eruption because we lived in Eagle River. The biggest worry was what the ash would do to auto engines. I also remember some discussion of the effect of the ash on the Matanuska Maid dairy cattle. [I don't remember what that was about.] Same thing in '86. Hey, it makes a deliciously frightening news headline.

Dear me, I hope this eruption doesn't cause any pollution. I'd hate to see the EPA have to go up there and arrest the volcano.

Polution, Smolution...BRING IT ON!

It's colder than a witch's *** down here an we need the heat!

Send all EPA JBTs up there and make them stay until it does blow. ;-)

Clearly our gluttonous consumption of fossil fuels has caused a disruption in Gaia. We must rescue the Caribou. Oh wait, in a minute, isn't it time to watch the Grammy's first. I hope Michael Moore is hosting this year.;-)

Well, so long as no volcanic ash falls on the ANWR, everything will be A-OK!

My wife, the crazy geologist, wants to go there right now for any possible big eruptions.

I think too many people forget that southern Alaska and the Aleutian Islands are on the so-called Ring of Fire and as such are subject to a lot of earthquakes and regular volcanic activity. Indeed, on Russia's Kamkatchka Peninsula west of the Aleutians, there are many very active volcanoes there.
