Canadian Prime Minister Martin May Well Lose His Seat in Parliament Says CTV Pollster

OTTAWA, December 21, 2005 (LifeSiteNews.com) - Canadian Prime Minister Paul Martin may lose his own seat in parliament according to new polling from his home province of Quebec. Martin, who is the MP for the Quebec riding of LaSalle-Emard in Montreal, despite his arrogance on television debates, may lose his seat to the Bloc Quebecois separatist party which has gained popularity in Quebec.

A new poll was conducted from December 17-19 by The Strategic Counsel for CTV and the Globe and Mail. The poll found that only 20% of Quebec residents will vote Liberal with a whopping 60% saying they will vote for the Bloc.

Tim Woolstencroft, managing partner with The Strategic Counsel, told CTV.ca "With the current numbers that they are polling in Quebec, the Liberals would be reduced to seven seats and this number would not include Mr. Martin's own seat. Right now, there's a risk that the PM might lose his own seat."

While the English-speaking sections of Montreal have usually been considered safe seats for the Liberals, the Strategic Counsel's most recent polling has found that even in Montreal the Bloc will garner nearly twice the votes of the Liberals.

Paul Martin's political demise would be the answer to a prayer...and a message from above?

The left is dying, everywhere. But, when i was a kid i used to trap. One day i trapped a fisher. It new it was going to die so it lunged at me, the trap slipped from its leg and proceeded to chase me snarling and screaming till i shot it with my gun. Anything that senses its dying becomes more dangerous

When it came to Jean Chretien back in '93, he couldnt win his seat in Quebec...he then went to New-brunswick and campaigned for the riding of Beausejour...which had been a Liberal stronghold for more than 60yrs. He barely won that seat...might have been by less than 300 votes if i remember correctly. Never know what can happen in canadian politics...corrupt? who's to judge?

On the intellectual level they are already dead. No new ideas. Nothing but complaints. Even the lies are recycled.

Unfortunately the zombiefied corpse of leftism is still stumbling around quite happily and causing mountains of mayhem. Its going to take a lot more work to drive a stake through the hart of liberalism.

I believe we have a good change of getting there.

The Bloc is, if anything, more leftist than is the Liberal party in Canada.

The reality of Canadian politics is that about 2/3 of the population votes leftist -- the only question is which of the three leftist parties they vote for.

BTW, nice to meet up with someone else who trapped as a kid. Out our way, we mainly trapped for fox and the occasional raccoon. I earned some good spending money that way, and got a lot of exercise walking my trapline.

Hardly anyone traps anymore, though -- can't say that I have the stomach for it myself these days. Times change...

not only was it money but how good the beaver, mink, muskrat, fox , wolf, fisher, otter, ect was that fall and winter would determine what kind of christmas we had. I also snared rabbits for food. Dont trap now but still hunt and fish. Tribal

"Dont trap now but still hunt and fish."

One of the big problems with this country is how out of touch with the land most people are. They have no idea where food comes from.

A nation of people who raise, hunt, or catch at least a part of their own food is a wiser and healthier one.

Good to see you here, Sachem. I've spent a lot of time out in Minnesota and northern Ontario, so I know your people's lifestyle very well.

I do have a question, though . . . What's the difference between the Asshinabe and Ojibway tribes? I thought the Ojibways and the Chippewa were the same, but on your profile page you say you are half Asshinabe.

What does this do to the Conservative Party? Does Harper have a chance to unseat Martin?

Kim Campbell was the last Prime Minister to lose her seat even as she saw her party wiped off the political map. The Progressive Conservatives in 1993 were reduced to a scant 2 seats in the House Of Commons. It doesn't look good for the Liberals in Quebec.

I think Chretien later ran for the seat in his native Shawinigan and kept it til he retired as Prime Minister two years ago.

Not really. The Bloc should win all the Francophone seats in Quebec. But the Anglphone seats should stay in Liberal hands. Unless the Conservatives make sizable gains in Quebec or pick more than a handful of seats in Atlantic Canada, the Liberals should return to head yet another minority government.

Canada has a parliamentary system, which means the prime minister is a member of parliament who is elected by other members of his own party in parliament.

If Martin loses his seat in Parliament, he can't be prime minister even if the Liberals retain control -- because he'll be out of government completely. The new prime minister would either be another Liberal (if they retain control) or Steven Harper (if the Conservatives win most seats in Parliament).
