Ariel gets a roasting on his diet
New York Daily News ^ | December 21, 2005

Hours before his stroke, supersized Israeli leader Ariel Sharon packed away an artery-clogging menu of burgers, steak in chimichurri sauce, lamb chops and shish kebab. For dessert, he had chocolate cake - and then some more cake, the Israeli daily newspaper Maariv reported.

And then, a little later, he capped it all off with Chinese noodles. Still, perhaps miraculously some might say, he emerged from Sunday's stroke care relatively unscathed.

Yesterday, he was lectured by both his doctors and President Bush to change his ways.

But it may prove a task even more difficult than the Mideast peace process itself.

"I need you healthy," Bush, a former runner and now avid mountain biker, reportedly told the prime minister in a phone conversation. "Be careful about food, start exercising and cut back on work hours," he advised the 77-year-old prime minister.

Not surprisingly, Sharon, who has a reputation for being set in his ways, has not yet decided whether to follow the advice.

Sharon will decrease his work load and spend the next few days primarily resting, Cabinet Secretary Yisrael Maimon said. But that's all he could promise.

"The prime minister is a man who already has a few years behind him. He has certain habits that I think are difficult to change," Maimon told Israel's Army Radio. "Regarding the culinary issues, maybe it's more difficult, but we will all pitch in." Doctors say overweight people tend to be more prone to strokes, but a repeat can often be avoided by a change in diet and weight loss.

Sharon, who is a portly 5-foot-7, often jokes about his love of food and his girth, but aides refuse to reveal his weight.

His favorite food is "meat in every way," adviser Asaf Shariv said. "He has been told he needs to go on a diet since 1965."

The diet he would have to go on to see any real benefits would probably kill him anyway. It's like a 100 year old smoker dying because they quit. He's probably eating 5 or 6000 calories a day, and he's going to have to cut it down to 1200 or so to see any benefits.

Hey, what's wrong with you? Haven't you heard that chocolate is good for your heart? Won't the cake balance the rest of that be balanced out by the chocolate? LOL

I shudder to think about what's impacted in his digestive system given the extension of his stomach.

He did that so he would feel hungry again an hour later?

Were there dairy products in that chocolate cake? Sounds like he's not keeping kosher.

That makes absolutely no sense. Energy-in/energy-out.

I'm shocked that his doctors haven't consulted with "global nutrition expert" clintoon about what diet Sharon should be on.

Denis Leary:

Not eating meat is a decision. Eating meat is an instinct!

I tried eating vegetarian. I felt like a wimp going into a restaurant. "What do you want to eat sir? Broccoli? Broccoli's a side dish, folks. Always was, always will be, OK! When they ask me what I want, I say: What do you think I want? This is America. I want a bowl of raw red meat right now!

LOL! President Bush will put a Jewish mother to shame when it comes to hanging a guilt trip on Sharon.

That's idiotic and insanely indulgent. His ancestors didn't live on so much meat. Apache Indians ate a meat heavy diet. Perhaps 70% meat. Ariel Sharon is not an Apache. It's a tribute to his iron constitution that he can live on meat and cake. That meal is probably typical. Best I can say it seems kosher, no traife

Was that just for ONE meal?......lol

wow and I thought my 2 year old son could eat...lol

maybe it was the noodles since the chocolate cake did not balance him out....lol

And he has survived to be 77 on that kind of diet?? WOW!!!

He loves meat, but it isn't the meat that's causing problems....it's the refined flour products, sugar and starchy veggies. Israel would do well to hire a chef to follow him around, creating tasty meals that will enable him to begin losing weight.

President Bush is right -- we need Sharon healthy!
