Strikers want respect more than money, but some say they would have settled

NEW YORK-It isn't about money or pensions for Angel Ortiz. It's about the contemptous glances, angry passenger rants and abusive bosses who rack up discipline slips and are stingy about sick days.

"Everybody treats me like crap all the time. We're tired of being treated like we're the garbage of the city," said Ortiz, 32, standing on the Bronx-Manhattan border Tuesday with hundreds of other striking transit workers underneath an elevated rail line that had no trains.

Cry me a frickin river.

"You've got to deal with the rats."

Then stop putting them in charge of your union.

If they wanted respect they shouldn't have gone on strike.

Great - Direct Deposit respect into their checking accounts twice a month.

I wonder if any of these fools has ever had to hack it in the private sector?

So they're going have a respect clause inserted in the contract?

They are in trouble...not only will they be fined the dollar amount of two day's pay for every day they strike, the strike is technically 'illegal' and if Bloomberg had any pride, he would fire them all.

BS. The unions always say its about respect when they fear they'll look greedy.

And how is this strike going to win them "respect"? Do they really think forcing millions of their fellow New Yorkers to spend the week before Christmas walking for hours in sub-zero temperatures to get to work will cut down on the "contemptuous glances" and "angry passenger rants"?

"Everybody treats me like crap all the time. We're tired of being treated like we're the garbage of the city."

Dude its New York....the place that invented yelling "jump" suicide jumpers and flipping off ambulances, with their sirens on in traffic, if you don't like it, drop dead...

Everybody treats me like crap all the time.

Maybe it has nothing to do with her job. Maybe she just smells like crap, and people are acting appropriately.

If the workers are treated like the token booth operator treated some visitors a few weeks ago, I can see their point.

Miserable nasty hatefilled coworkers and bosses are no fun.

However, belonging to a union means never being fired, never getting merit pay, and never being treated with dignity.

Not a happy situation but there's no answer for it.

Grow a skin and go back to work. Who is feeding your family while you pity yourself?

I don't think Bloomberg has any measure of control in this situation. He's the mayor of New York City, and technically I believe these are not city employees -- they work for the Metropolitan Transportation Authority, which is a regional agency that covers a large region that includes the surrounding New York suburbs.

Apparently Mr. Ortiz never saw Ghost Busters where the mayor said, "Being miserable and treating other people like dirt is every New Yorker's God-given right."

"..We're tired of being treated like we're the garbage of the city,"

Here's a suggestion: Take some night (or day) courses, become a plumber, electrician, carpenter, lawyer. If you don't like your job, the last time I checked, we could quit and look elsewhere. What a concept!! Freedom!! Anything but this incessant whining for pete's sake. Grow some dignity.
